a core charge usually is charged (or not if you trade in the part) b/c they will take your old part, fix it and then re-sell it... they loose the profit... so you pay....

I hope the dealer is truthful about selling a repaired wheel. I can understand a core for an alternator or water pump, but a wheel is different.

I agree.. they probably scrap the wheel and maybe that is its approx worth as raw metal...

Both wheel remanufacturers I use charge a $50 core. One doesn't care how badly the wheel is damaged, the other one won't accept one that's not repairable. I don't think it's all about the scrap value, as they will accept substitute oe wheels of any make as an acceptable core. They want nothing to do with aftermarket wheels.
I haven't checked scrap aluminum prices lately but I'm guessing $15 to $20 per wheel. Seems like it was $8 to $12 a few years back.

Hold on here !

tlsluver specifically said the dealer wanted the core charge. Since when do dealers sell re-conned rims or any re-conned parts for that matter ? They should be brand new and are not an "exchanged" part, hence no core charge. Of course it totally depends on the price. If their charging you significantly less than new, then you shouldn't complain.

I had mine done by Keystone and not only did they forget about the exchange (I now have four extra rusty rims) but I got them for $100 per wheel ! Cheaper than steel !

Dealers can and do use wheel rebuilders routinely. They're sometimes required to by insurance companies as well. They also sell stuff like alternators, starters, etc. that are remanufactured by honda, and will use other rebuilders like napa if the situation warrants it.
