H&R Spring model question
H&R Spring model question
Hi Guys,
Can someone tell me the difference between the following H&R springs:
Sport Spring 50103
Sport Spring 51858
The first one is newer...but they are both sport springs.
Thanks!!

I am sure this question has been asked many times and some other nasty TL member would say "use the search" function, plus more negative comments.
But here is the answer to your question:

Thanks! I found the old article using the search later too. As you can see...I'm still trying to decide.
I went to the store ready to buy the Tiens...but the guy there mentioned some things which made me rethink. I live in Alberta, Canada, and apparently a lot of owners here are having problems with their Tiens rusting in the winter. So he classifies them as high maintenence for our climate.
Another place I went to said aftermarket shocks/springs will only last about 4-5 years. He said they weren't meant to last as long as OEM. I hope that isn't true...I think it all depends on the brand you get.
I'm now thinking of going with H&R's and a good shock. I'm leaning towards the H&R OE or Sports with the Bilstein shocks. Those shocks seem to be very good in quality and have a lifetime waranty.
Thanks so much for your support Michael03TLS. I really wish I could test drive my vehicle with the spring/strut setup I want ... but I guess that's not possible. I think stores should set up demo cars with various setups - it's like when you buy a new car...you've gotta see how it rides first!
Hopefully I can get something soon....
Any comments on H&R OE with Bilstein? Think that's a good combo? Does the OE also sag in the rear..or is it just the sport?
Thanks!

TL, I assume you aren't going with Tein coilovers now?
you said:
I wouldn't doubt it one bit because in the past Tein coilover's lower spring seat locking rings had some rust issues in which the seat rings broke on their coilovers; as you can imagine when they break, your whole suspension will fall in that particular corner of the vehicle. They have since said they fixed the problem but only time will tell on the "improved" seat locking rings which are green now instead of silver.
Also it was mentioned by "Keepingitclean" that Tein springs are made in China so go figure
. It wouldn't surprise me one bit. He also mentioned that Japanese coilovers are made from outsourced parts in Taiwan. I don't doubt that either although some members were more skeptical of this comments.

I would have to disagree with this. First off for example, Eibach springs have a million mile warranty! As far as granting warranty and it's conditions, you have to find out more but it's worth looking into those springs. Eibach Sport springs I believe drop 2.1 front and 1.6 back. I am not sure if they make a milder drop or not. One member called "Patrick" has H&R Race springs here and he had them for a few years already and had no problems, besides me riding in his car, it seems like it was still holding up in terms of it's strength, absorption of bumps, lack of sag issues, etc. We don't have much snow so can't say about rust issues for sure or not. I don't know what they meant when they said "aftermarket springs will only last 4-5 years"; did he mean rust problems or construction wise? I am guessing construction wise.

Actually it is sort of possible
If you ever came to Vancouver, I would certainly be able to give you a ride quality test on Tein coilovers. Secondly, there is a local members who have H&R Sport springs with stock TLS shocks that I meet locally and they would be able to give you a ride test on that H&R Sport Spring; I am sure he wouldn't mind giving a test ride if I rang him up. If I meet up with him, I will test his H&R sport springs suspension to see what's it's like with stock TLS shocks. Of course aftermarket shocks are better to "Pair" with the H&R springs but I am still interested to see what's it like. I have already also ridden in another members car with H&R Race springs, the most aggressive drop springs of H&R springs, with Tokico Blues on a TL-P and it was quite smooth still. I mean it's bumpier and rougher if you were used to a TL-P but if that set-up was done on a TLS, it would be more or less stock-like feeling to it.
I also trust that CL member, NiteQwill, opinion on his setup with H&R Sport paired with Bilstein shocks and providing "stock" feeling of a CLS. Just remember TLS and CLS are more bumpier and rougher riding quite a bit than a TL-P due to the suspension and tire profile differences to begin with. Ride or test drive a used TLS, with fairly low kilometers, to see what's it like in a TLS if you don't already know how it feels.
I think it would be a good combination. Even a mild drop, using Tein H.Tech springs paired with stock TLS, was quite comfortable when I rode a local member's car with that setup. Mild drops are usually less bone-jarring over bumps and not that harsh riding.
I learned something very interesting from a local TL member recently. He said that H&R OE and H&R Race springs only showed up for Acura TL cars 2001 and below years. If you look at the hrsprings.com site and use the "applications", for years 2002 and 2003 TL , it only shows H&R Sport springs. Why? The TL local member phoned H&R and ask if he put H&R OE springs on his 2002 TL , would it be okay? I think the answer was it was okay but they wouldn't guarantee any warranty issues on that. Humm, that makes you think or question why. Is it because they had problems with H&R Race and OE springs with TL 2002 and 2003 models? Even though it shouldn't, it does make you wonder why it doesn't show up in the application charts for those years 2002/2003 TL or TLS.
I am not a 100% if H&R OE springs sag or have any issues at all with them.

Yeah, I'm not going with the Tien's anymore. I think I'm pretty much set on the H&R OE Sports. They are the only other quality brand which provides a milder drop.
I like the drop height from Snowman81's post:
https://acurazine.com/forums/ramblings-12/honda-song-119109/
I'm just trying to make a list of good shocks for pairing up with the OE's now. He's using the Tokico Blues. Also on my list: Bilstein Sports (but made for the Accord), Tokico Illuminas, and KYB GR-2's.
So correct me if I'm wrong...but I'm assuming the OE + any of the above shocks will give me a firmer, better handling ride than the stock TL-P ride. Do you have any recommendations form the list above? Seems like the Bilstein's may be the best quality...
Thanks!

Yes from a 1) TL-P point of view to a 2) TLS-like type of suspension or an aftermarket suspension, it will definitely be firmer, bumpier but yet still quite comfortable; Something like a BMW type of feel, but your ride will still feel quite good if you still have your oem TL-P 60 series tires. Those 60 series tires absorb the bumps more than a TLS 50 series tires.
Yes the Bilsteins are certainly worth looking at as they are good shocks. Not a lot of people with TL's or CL's have it because they assume it was for the Honda Accord only and only works with that but I showed you that "NiteQwill" from the CL forum and he used it and was very happy. He's happy with his setup.
Koni Yellows are another popular choice for performance shocks. From what I read, it is going to be firmer than Tokico Illuminas and more performance-oriented at the expense of more firmer, bumpier ride.
Good luck,
Michael

I have 1 set of the H&R Sports 51858(full Black color) for the 99-01 TL left. I sold one to a friend of mines and they drop the car evenly with no sagging issues what so ever. They even have a custom sub box in the rear and the car still sits evenly. I guess those sagging issues only came with the springs that had the greay and black sets.
I just found out that Bilstein now has a strut made for the 2001 Acura CL. The CL weighs more than the Honda Accord, so think it will be a better choice for the TL.
Does anyone know if the rear of the CL weights more than the rear of the V6 Accord?

I have Sport Spring 51858 on my 02 TL, no sag in the rear at all...
but now I wanna get coilover instead...either Tein SS or Tein basic, but my bet is all depends on my budget
Actually what is the diff between Tein SS & basic?
If I just want the look and performance but with good ride quality, which one is more preferable?
And also, where can I find the best price for Tein coilover in Vancouver B.C. area? thanks.

Read here for my response to the Tein Basics and Tein SS, about 4-5 of my replies down the page somewhere.

It should answer all of your questions. As far as price goes in Vancouver, they all more or less the same price all over unless you have a membership to buy Tein coilovers at MFT Technology at #3-8808 Laurel Street, Vancouver, B.C. 604-323-2655. No, I don't have a membership but just know that you can get a discount if you do have a membership.
