Difference between Lowering Springs and Coilovers
Hey everyone, so i searched and I was actually surprised there was no sticky about this...
so I just got my new rims and what not, but I have to get my drop in order for it to look any sort of nice (no SUV status you know?)
my question is, what's the difference between springs and coilovers?
I can get eibach springs for relatively cheap, and they'll lower the car (1.6/2.1)
From what I can gather, coilovers will allow you to adjust the ride to whatever height you want? I live in northern NY so slamming just isn't an option, and I'm fairly sure 2 inches lower will make my car look better...
do coilovers offer any other value other than adjustable ride height? It'd be hard to justify the price if that's all because I'm not looking to scrape the ground, though that would be nice :-)

That is the main purpose of a coilover is to be able to adjust the height. If its a good set of coilovers the shocks are matched to the springs. I personally am not a fan of coilovers for snow states. I have had a set become unadjustable after 1 winter (Tein) and know others with the same problems with different brands. Snow and salt can get to the sleeve and pit them.

Thanks man, Coilovers are a bit out of my range anyways and since once I drop it, I'm keeping it there (or i'll go back to the stock springs)
thanks a bunch! now I have to find some tsx rims :-/

just a thought...when you put lowering springs on stock shocks you are bound to blow them eventually (especially when you put them a car with over 100k miles like mine). so for the cost of lowering springs plus decent shocks that can handle being lowered, why not just go for F&F Type 1 or Tein Basics?
fsttyms1 - is there any way to repair them after theyve been pitted?

Secondly, I'm not trying to slam it to the ground, nor am I going to be driving it much. Slamming it would be impractical because the roads suck where I live and since this isn't my DD (i have an x5) i figure if i can get the look I want without paying a fortune, it'll be for the better.
That being said, I have a black market thread open, if ANYONE has decent springs with a 2.0/2.1 f 1.6/1.7 r drop that they don't use anymore please let me know. I would buy the eibachs but I don't want to spend 200 bucks for brand new ones if someone has used ones that are in good shape.

oh man those rims are ridiculous.
i'd love a set on my nbp haha
and i'll definitely keep them in mind.
I know those are coils but the principle should be the same for shocks and springs right?

spring/shock combo don't have that height adjustable thread like coilovers do, so there is nothing you need to do to rust-proof/anti-seize.
That's my main deterrant for coilovers right now, since I drive my car in winter. The high-end teflon coilovers are out of my reach. But I heard GC coilover sleeves are aluminum and don't rust so I'll have to check those out...

^Yeah, as a winter driver I can't either.
Springs and shocks will be fine for me, I'm not really worried about it
now the question becomes actually getting the springs! anyone have an extra set? please??

Yeah I am! lol I have weird weird tastes. So long as it isn't gaudy I think it'll be fine.
I'm going to start with just the stock 16s I have because I can either afford the drop or new rubber for the tsx rims. but after the winter I'll put rubber on the tsx rims and they'll be ready for the spring.
I'll have to consider the mirrors, I have a NBP, I wanted to buy a lip kit and paint it the orange color. I dunno, thoughts?
