can 225/45/17 be used instead of 215/50/17s??

I was wondering if i can run 225/45/17 tires instead of the stock 215/50/17s?? It is going on the stock TL Type S wheels. I want to run the General UHP exclaims. i love thoughs tires and they are pretty reasonable. so i was wondering if you guys know if i can substitute for them. i would not mind going wider so i have a larger contact patch on the road. any suggestions?? thanks

they will fit on, but they are smaller overall dia throwing your speedo off. the 235/45 would be a closer match to factory specs. There have been some to run that size with out issue

Anyone know if 235/45 on stock TL-S wheels with a H&R sport drop will rub?

235's require a minimum wheel width of 7.5" as per manufacturers recommendations.

There is a member running 235/45's on his TYpe S wheels. i believe he was running continential's. i can see what everyone is talking about as far as being safe due to the overall width of the 235s over the 215s. its roughly 2in wider than the 215's. but He is running the 235s on his wheels and it seem that he states its ok and runs very well. The manufactures are recommendations for safety. But ive seen guys run retarded types of combos.

Back in hawaii when i was living there since i was born and raise there. we had a ton of trucks that were going offroad. it was crazy due to the tire and wheel combos they were using. Ive seen guys stretch the super swampers on to wide ass wheels. For example they would run a 33in x 10.5in wide on a 12 or 15 in wide wheel. so it was stretched. they ran them on the road pretty often. it looked totally unsafe because you would figure one curb and they would blow the bead. but they never did and they are still running thoughs types of combos till now.
A buddy of mines ran a 14.5in wide tire on a 10in wheel. it bubbled on the thread meaning it looked half moon shapped on the thread but it did hold and we went offroading like crazy.

So the tire manufactures do put that as a safety precaution its due to the fact where if something goes wrong with the improper combo they will not be liable. it actually comes down to the person whom you purchase the tire and had it mounted. they are usually the ones that have to cover there side and recommend certain sizes for you. but its actually entirely up to you. i believe you can run it safely as per what other members have done. there has been no signs of blow outs or any wheel slipping off the bead. the side wall will flex a little differently since the tire is much wider than the wheel so it might handle differently might be bad or good it just depends on your set up and the way you drive.

i might be looking into the 225/50s in the kumho kh11s or i might be running the general uhp exclaims in the 235/45s. but it all depends on what i can afford. the kh11s i can get for $88 each from discount and the UHPs i can get it for the tirerack price of $79 each which is the tire i prefer. so im up in the air. i have roughly a day to figure out what im going to choose. but well see.

The beads on off-road tires are much larger compared to street tires. They are designed that way for those exact reasons you described. The larger bead also allows the tire to stay put when airing down the tire for more traction. These 2 types of tires cannot be compared in reference to fitment. I've had my off-roading days and seen several guys blow beads on the trails. Sucks when it happens on the trails; deadly when it's on the street.

Actually 235s are only 2 centimeters (20 millimeters) wider than the 215s, which is just under four-fifths of an inch.

Lawaia, you're right - all tire mfrs say to run 7.5" wheels for 235s. I was just wondering if any AZ member was running those wheels on stock TL-S wheels, which of course are 6.5" wide - with an H&R sport drop. I searched and saw a few members that were running this combo a couple of years ago and was wondering if they had any long-term problems. I don't remember if any of them were dropped.

Cool, Kuni808 and Lawaia are from Hawaii, as I am. Howzit Brahs!

I lived on Oahu for about 14 years total - the last time was 8 years in Mililani, where I graduated HS in MHS (a long time ago).

Hey guys. well i just mounted up in the rear only with the 235/45s and its an ok size. It mounts up right. it looks almost close to stock just a little bulge on the sidewall due to the width of the tire. its an ok match. not the greatest but ok. If you are on a budget then its ok. but I think i would have rather gone with a 225/50 or even the stock. The traction is a little better but on the highway it makes a big difference. when you are changing lanes due to the the width of the tire and how narrow the wheel is it kind of shimmys a little. but that is only in the rear. im not sure how it would affect it in the front. It ok if you dont drive too aggressive. If you just cruise and such it should be ok. I believe it feels like the side wall is flexing more than the regular 215s. but its ok. I got a deal on them and i needed tires quick so i figure these will suffice for me until i get my 19s back on the road.

Ohh update on the 19s. the bend i had previously in the wheel when i got it i guess i hit the bend one more time and it set the bead off. so thats why it leaked. so i have to get the wheel repaired It kind of sucks but ohh wells. plus i have to buy all 4 new tires now because the front tire when i got the flat rubbed the shit out of the inside of the tire so it was a little dangerous to put back the 555 because in vegas heat i dont want the tire to blow out on me. there was rubber shavings all inside of the tire. so i had to trash that one. crap. so i know i have to replace 3 of the tires so i might as well replace the last one. so my 19s will be MIA for a little while until i can get two wheels fixed. thats all for now. ill try and post of pics of the 235/45 on my 17s. so you can get an idea on how they fit. oh i got the general exclaims uhps in that size. i love thoughs tires. great value and they last a long time!!!

a day update on the tires: the 235s i think are a little too wide. its kind of fun though since when you corner hard it feels like the rear slides and then grips. so its kind of fun!!. haha. but if you drive a lot on the highway i dont recommend it. the car will start to shimmy on the highway. but for stop and go traffic its pretty fun.

Update on 19s. well i took it to a guy to get the wheel fixed and i just found this out from him. he advised me the lip on the harts are rolled. but when he was turning the wheel on the balancer machine man that thing was warped to hell. also where it started to leak there was three bends all in line. so it that is why it leaked to shit. the M5 is a multiple piece wheel. the lip , rear, face, lug nut cap, and center cap lock is a lot of piece for a wheel haha. i was flipping out when i saw him turning the wheel on the machine. so anyways. it costed me $125 so ill show you a before and after of the wheel.

ill keep you guys updated.
