You can but your tire choices are limited. 225 is really the widest you can put on the stock rim

The rim really isnt designed to "safely" hold wider tires. Its only a 6.5" wide rim. Most tire manufacturers want a 7" for a 225

Yes, thats what comes on them. Now if you got the CL-S wheels you could do 225 easier. They are 7"

Because the 2nd # is a aspect ratio of the first. Meaning the tire DIA will be smalller thus causing the speedo to be off.

Yes, go with 225, but leave it at 225/50, don't go smaller...

That is stock size, so of course they will fit....

I had 225 on my stock rims for over 40k miles, no issues yet... just a lot of road noise as my tires are coming up on needing to be changed...

I have Yoko V4S 225/50-17 on stock rims for about ~50K miles now. Performance is noticeably better than stock (215/50). Highly recommend putting on 225/50, no issue at all.

This summer, I'm planning on upgrading to new 18" wheels/tires, as my V4S is getting bald. Can't wait!

just to put things into perspective

6.5" = 165mm

the stock wheels are 215

a square set-up on the wheels would probably be 205's

I wouldn't really go over 215, as there is no advantage in any way. You'll increase the rolling friction which theoretically reduces gas mileage and acceleration. You won't gain traction, it's based more upon your rubber compound and tire pressure...so just get a good tire if you're looking for traction. You'll have more tire roll because they will bulge out a little more. You may even pay a little more for the same brand tire in a wider form.

I would only go a little wider than 215 if you're putting slicks on it, even then you wouldn't need much more, if any.

I don't care if it's still reliable, you'd be putting a 225 or 235 mm tire on a 165mm wheel.

If you want wider tires, get wider wheels. If you want 235's you'll want 8" wide rims.

So what exactly is the reason you want to put 235's on the stock S rims?
It won't look any better... If you want a lower profile, just get a tire with a lower second number. Meaning if you have 215/50/17's get 215/45/17 or 215/40 or 215/35 lol if you can find some. The downside of going lower profile than the ones on the rims right now is that you'll feel more of the road, and also you run more risk of damaging the rim in a pot hole or curb or any other driving hazard, also you'll increase the wheel gab and the wheels may look too small for the vehicle.
