Will I pass???

Wassup peoples, a couple of months ago my check engine light came on and I went to autozone got the code pulled and it was P0420 which is the Cat converter, now the light has been off since it was reset, I'm do for an expection, will the Cat affect the results or since the light is off right now it won't affect anything......Opinions please

Im sure there would be a charge for that.... but then again it would help avoid a failed smog test and be labeled a gross polluter.

In that case I would be paying for an inspection twice which would add up to about $70 and thats the price I would pay if I didn't want to put my car on the machine and just got an inspection sticker from a not so legal place.....Sooooo, any other suggestions, but thanks anyway!

How are we supposed to diagnose this over the Internet? If the CEL is off, get the inspection done now.

Exactly! Or take it to a mechanic and have them look at it.

I don't recall asking you guys to do the impossible, I was asking for some "Opinions" not magic, the second part about the CEL light being off is really all I wanted to know.

You have a short memory. Please let us know how the 'expection' you are 'do' for goes.

Aw come on mike, give the guy a break. Obviously he's a newbie. He's just asking for help on the expection that's do. Ok I'm joking.

Anyhow there's only really two options:

1. Risk it and go ahead with the smog check.

2. Pre test it and see if it does fail.

Or you can just go ahead and get the inspection from the "not so legal place." Although, if the code that was pulled up said that your Cat is the problem.. most likely you'll fail.

I dunno. Try borrowing someone elses cat back?

Well since the light is out right now, at least you dont automatically fail before you even start the test.

As far as the rest of the test goes, the only way to know is to go get the emissions checked to see where you are at. A car can fail smog even if the check engine light is not lit.
