whining sound from engine

Few months ago, started hearing some repeated metal rubbing noise which follows the engine rpm. On freeways repeated rubbing becomes high-pitched noise. I am wondering what is going on. My wild guess is some revolving parts may be in alternator might be out of alignment and is causing this noise.

You may also want to check your belt tensioner to see if that's not the source of the noise.

ac belt tensioner most common source of noise, observe it while buddy revs engine
should be smooth- jerky indicates failure
also grease stains from roller mean failure

spend 4 bucks at harbor freight tools or 10 at any parts store for a mechanics stethoscope
finds cause of noises fast!

thanks, i have to rev engine while opening the hood and car is in neutral. i never tried on my acura, on my old honda crx, i used to rev by pressing on nearby air intake valve under the hood. not sure if something equivalent is in acura.

yeah the throttle and cruise cables go to the rear driver side of TB, I use that all the time for rpm control when working on the car
may have to remove the plastic engine cover- mine is on the shelf so wouldn't know~

ok, took it to the indie foreign repair shop and have them inspected. I just received a call from them saying that noise is coming from tranny. as far as they said, no issue with the tranny at least for now.

Also they are starting to recommended my tranny to be re-built I mentioned to them I wanted to install AV6 but they would not do that and insisting me on rebuilt. I told em that most of users prefers to get AV6 tranny no problem but guy is saying AV6 used one you dont know its condition and their tech has years of experience and during rebuild will remove the part that is causing the issue nad will put the part that fixes the tranny issue. I know most ppl in this forum is strictly saying NO to rebuild instead get a AV6 tranny from honda. so I am not sure what to do in this case i usually trust posters here definitely more than acura dealers and even indie shops Thank god I am not driving my car too much as I am commuting mostly with my motorcycle damn thread is turning into another hellish tranny issue

sounds like a great service writer = the person whose existence there depends on getting more money out of every pocket then enters the door
get them in with a cheap estimate then find major problem to upsell

did they state the tech has rebuilt over 100 TL/CL gen2 transmissions with no failures or returns? that would be ok, but not likely
There is big labor hours in the rebuilding process!

please go to the section at top of pages- REGIONS that's areas of the country with ziners holding meets etc- can find someone to help you with a diagnosis or a full trans swap if needed- done the way you want

Note the` bad part` is no oil flow to 3rd gear clutch pack- you can install better-Kevlar clutches but problem still exist till they wear out from same lack of oil cooling

if you own a `post 2005` warranty installed rebuilt trans- it has better oil flow/new case design, and is ok for use to rebuild
earlier case with the external oil jet kit on top- not the good ones!

Still not sure why you havnt got that stethoscope and inspected noises per our instructions
Could be something simple while shop tries to bend you over,,indie shop- did not notice `Acura specialist` in the description you provided
Most places run from rebuilding our trans!!!!

If your only transmission symptom is gear whine, let it go. I monitored my daughter's honda as it went from an electric motor- like whir, to a supercharger-like whine, to a blender-like noise. When it gets near garbage disposal noise, it's time to act. It took couple years as I recall. You'll probably get shift and/or slippage problems before then. As many others have posted, go with the 06-07 accord trans. They are even less failure prone than the 05> acura transmissions that 01tl mentioned.

I mention the `post 2005` warranty replacement trans better for rebuilding than OE trans of earlier vintage based on improvements inside it

but in comparison to a better design from several years newer technology- I would go for that~

ck your insurance- some companies offer 10$ a year for towing and other road service
If you don't need maps~

With that all you need are a cell phone and some emergency phone quarters- let the TL do its best for you for a few more years

If its funky shifting try SS mode on UPshifts only- that uses a higher line pressure

ok thanks guys, speakin of which i was wondering the other issue also related to tranny at all. HEre is the story, around 30-40mph during acceleration engine jerks for about 1-2 seconds. I thought might be tranny failure. However technician pointed it could be a motor mount problem. It started happening after I towed for about 1000miles during out of town trip.

Yeah, it'd definitely be worth checking the mounts as your technician advised. Mounts can cause problems and so can towing, so rule out the cheapest thing first.
