When to replace motor mount?
My 2000 3.2 TL is at the shop for service right now, just hit 120,000 miles. They're telling me I need a new front and side motor mount. Total would be $500. I know nothing about cars and never heard of a motor mount till now. I searched this forum and noticed that most people get their motor mount replaced after hearing clunking noises. Right now, I don't hear any noises at all. Should I let it go a while? Or fix it now while it's not too bad? I can spend the $500 now, but of course I'd rather not spend it for another year if that's possible... any thoughts?

most people dont even know when they are bad, they dont need to be making noise to be shot. but its a common problem on the TL. You could buy them and have a independent shop install them alot cheaper
You can buy them here

Although mine so obviously needed to be replaced, here's how they tested mine:
Pop the hood and stay there. Have someone use the gas and brakes at the same time. Have someone press and hold the brake while they rev the car at the same time (do NOT let off the brake!). Blip the throttle to a pretty high RPM, but don't hold it. Do this many times until you can made a conclusion. Watch each mount. If you have a ton of engine movement, it's pretty likely they need to be replaced. Keep an eye on the mounts themselves while doing this test and you should be able to see what they are doing/what condition they're in. If they are broken, you will see that.
If you feel uneasy about doing this --- don't!

thanks fsttyms1 for the info.
Any recommendation of auto service stations for this kind of problem? My car is always seeing Acura dealer since I bought it... but this time, I think I should give a try.

What are the piping on the engine mounts? Are they running hydralic between each other? I have never seen before. Last time I had my second tranny replaced, the dealer told me I need to replace the engine mount but I forgot which one was it. The part and labor was covered under the extended warranty.

Currently having a new transmission installed on my 03, had the dealer check the front motor mount, and told me that they recommended replacement, and will be done along with the transmission at no charge, due to the extended warranty.

sweet...., even if you were paying for it, this be the time to do it, be just the cost of the mount itself, cause the mount is already out
