What is your Gas Mileage?
Hey guys,
I just notice one person in another thread said he he usually does 380 miles a tank. I just recently bought a Used WDP 02 TL and I only get about 250-275 a tank...
How many MPG or Miles Per Tank do you guys usually get?
Oh and if there is a thread like this, I'm sorry! I couldn't find anything...

Isn't there some component which lets the engine slip in overdrive?

Well I do alot of short trips in stop and go traffic but still I get very bad gas mileage, under 200 miles per tank, I'm working on somethings now but it can be a number of things, any advice would help as to where I should start first.

With my Type S, I do 70% city and 30% highway. I get on avg about 285 miles per tank using Shell V-Power and fill up about every 12 days. On my last road trip, on average I got 390 miles per tank averaging 80mph with no AC. That's high altitude as well. My city best was 350 and highway best was 475 while on I-70 in Kansas with AC in the summer. Not bad for high output V6!!

These "miles per tank" reports are difficult to compare since everyone's definition of a "tank" will vary. A much more useful measurement is miles per gallon.
In any case, I typically get about 320 miles in my 1999 TL before the low fuel light comes on. The corresponding fuel economy numbers are typically around 26 MPG. This is a mix of about 75% highway driving and 25% city driving.

So, I just recently bought my TL and first 2 fills I got were about 220-250 per tank (50/50 city and highway), which I thought was fairly low. So after going through the forum and reading what everyone had to say, I changed my oil with Mobil 1 FS 5w-30 as well as used a fuel cleaning system and adjusted the pressure in my tires. I will update the difference in my MPG once I have to fill again…
Again, thank you everyone for replying so quickly to this thread.

Right now I'm very happy with the 26 MPG that I'm getting in mixed driving. It's better than I expected given the performance of the car.

I get 32+ with my Type-S automatic. Mostly Highway/rural driving. Highway driving is typically at 75+ from Colorado Springs to Denver. I'm reasonably conservative in my rural driving but don't hesitate to exceed the 75mph speed limit on the highway, hitting 85 - 100 in some sections of my 90 mile drive. No complaints here. I do have an K&N air filter, but didn't notice much (if any difference in mileage after installing it. I'm running premium fuel from various stations.
on my trip to Oregon I got about 30MPG there and 31MPG on the way back. I averaged 80MPG the whole way.
in town is a different story. i get average 240 a tank which comes out to just about 19MPG. apparently that is good for city driving on this engine. it still sucks filling up every week and a half since 95% of my driving is in town stop and go.

OK here is my question: How big is TL's gas tank? I believe it is 15 gallons. I don't know where you guys take 16 or 17. The reason I say that, when I get to the bottom of my gas metter, I am at about 320-330 miles and when I fuel I usually get 13.5 gallons or 14.1 or something. So I think that TL's gas tank is more like 15 gallons.
Ok here is something to concider. On my first vehicle (0ldsmobile intrigue) I have been getting about 220 miles tops on a tank. But then I have clieand my air sensor (located by the air filter box) with air compressed cleaner. After that sensor cleaned I was doing 300 miles a tank...80 miles jump is not bad huh!!!
I am about to do that to my TL and see how will that improve my MPG.

I use to consistently get 320 miles for a tank but now I'm getting 240 miles. I haven't done anything different and I still drive the same way but all of a sudden my gas mileage drops. I did notice recently that when I step on the gas hard, it's not as responsive as before. I'm not sure what is causing this but I'm thinking it might be the spark plugs since I'm at 87K miles. I checked my tires and they are properly inflated and I get my oil changed according to schedule.
Anyone have any ideas on what's going on and how to fix it?

I get about anywhere form 20 to 25 depending on how much highway driving I have do. The best I have ever seen was about 26.3. I have never taken the TL on a long enough trip thats straight highway but I have heard lots of people claim around 30 and I diffenently dont doubt it at all.
As far as how many miles to a tank I cant actually say. I try not to spend a lot of money when i go out so to accomplish this I dont bring a lot with me 30 at most. So I have never actually bought a full tank of gas. However, I do always cacluate my mileage.

its weird man sometimes i'll get 380-400 before the light comes on and somes i'll get 350. I drive back and forth from ATL to NC because i go to school there. Onmy wayback yesterday i got 390 beore the light comes on
I get 380-450 all the time summer all HWY. Even with the type-s motor now im still getting the same as my old TL-P motor did. Its dropped down about 50 now that its winter and we have the winter blend fuels
I have a 2002 TL-S and I've been able to get up to 31.7 MPG when I'm doing highway driving between 70-75 MPH.
The only mods I have are a K&N filter, airbox resonator removed, and lightweight pulleys. I've always figured those pulleys must help me out a bit on mileage, but since they were on there when I bought it I have no frame of reference.

I get 24-25 with mixed driving. Highway=all highway on 1000 mile trips I have gotten 28-29 with the air running = 95 degrees out and 31 with no air in cooler weather. I did get better mileage with the Michelin (original tires) vs. the Yoko's. My mileage dropped 1 to 2 miles per gallon with the Yokohama's tires. The Michelins must have less rolling resistance. Tires make a difference. The more grip, the less mileage.
