Trunk won't close - 2002 TL

This morning I used my key fob to open the trunk (worked fine). Went to close the trunk and it will not close!! Checked the #12 fuse on the passenger side and it is ok. Tried pressing the button inside the car to reset (?) trunk latch - to no avail. I can't see where anything broke off...can anyone tell me what this could be please? I can't drive around with a shoelace holding down my trunk lid...

is the latch in the closed position not allowing it to latch or is it open and just not allowing it latch shut?

Latch open

The latch is in the open position - it just won't catch. It's not like the metal J hook is striking the U shaped piece inside the trunk...I've tried pushing on the white plastic piece with a screwdriver - it makes the J hook come down, but doesn't catch on anything to keep it in the locked position.

Mine did the samething about 6 months after we bought our car. I adjusted the striker and that atleast held the trunk and it worked if we slammed it shut. We I took the car to the dealer he said it looked like the striker was bent so I hammered it back straight but its still not perfect but its alot better.

maybe the rubber pieces the trunk hits when closed are too high. ucan try to twist them in a lil, they're threaded.

I went out there with a screwdriver yesterday - in addition to not being able to fix it, a spring popped off in my hand. Now the car is at the dealership being repaired (sigh). When they tell me what's wrong, I will post it. I was thinking it might have been a solenoid as I did not hear it trying to open when I pushed the key fob or the button inside the car. Wonder how much this is going to cost?? More details to follow...

It's probably the electronic motor to unlock the trunk. The motor is getting stuck in the open position(unlock position). YOu can replace the trunck latch motor yourself. It will cost about 60 bucks for the part. Try hitting the side of the latch motor where the cable is hooked on to the plastic lever, with the handle side of a screwdriver. that may get it to unstick.
