transmission flush
transmission flush
I had an independent shop flush my trans today and after it was flushed the mechanic took it for a test drive and now the tcs light comes, cel light is on, and the d5 flashes and it wont shift out of first gear. I never had problems with trans. before this. the tech said its giving a code for a sensor in trans. Ant ideas? has anyone had to change either the pick up assy on trans or the power steering sensor asy in trans? could the dex 3 cause this problem?
I've heard many times that a transmission flush can often times precipitate a tranny failure. Also, our cars have a very specific way to "flush" the transmission, and your shop might not have done it correctly.
How many miles do you have on it?

Dex3 can be used only in an `EMERGENCY` to top off low fluid level
The owner book calls for ~what is referred to by honda as a flush~ but is a manual drain and refill method. The trans will only give up 3 qts of its 7 total at a draining, so you drain then refill with 3 qts- drive 5 minutes- drain-refill, drive 5-drain refill drive,,,, the 3x3 method
Flush with a machine of any kind is prohibited
HONDA ZR1 atf is the approved fluid. Some thrillseeker ziners use amsoil with mixed results
but the book is very specific about the dex3 MUST be cleaned thoroughly from the system with the 3x3 if it has been added to the trans fluid- in an emergency- thats how they look at anything but the special honda fluid with its own additives
The lights and symptoms are that of dramatic and traumatic clutch pack failure- the normal things to go on a TL trans failure.
Now the big questions for you- what year is your car- is the title salvage/rebuilt?
or is it a normal car?
whats the current miles
Acura- with the exception of salvage cars- was ordered by the court to extend the warranty on the trans -on 99s thru most of 03 -by VIN number,
get 7 years Plus 9 months from first date of service or 109,000 miles (whichever first)
free trans replacement- a $4000 value!
Out of vin range- late 03- or over time or miles often get free or way reduced price for trans and install
see the Tranny failure thread for details, but if you call the dealer and leave out the part about the fluid change- just say suddenly the d5 flashes and wont shift- They will immedialty suspect trans failure
Next question for them- can they send a tow truck please?
Its covered by the warranty!!
Dont be surprised if the front and passenger side motor mounts need replacement- common prob- hi tech front mount with hydraulic fluid, and some early years have a vacuum assist front motor mount (source of unfindable small vac leak!) so when you get on it- the mount actually gets tighter~
expect $150 for front and $50 for the side
register with acura at 1-800-382-2238 x5 and here `by VIN` for both of them
http://owners.acura.com/registration...erstepone.aspx (look in recall section there)
store your radio and nav security codes there too- a secure account thats just for your car.
free owner handbook if you didnt get one with the car-
click year, then model https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/...01_OMANUAL.asp
You have the acurazine curse- get a TL- find azine- the trans fails!!
you start life off with half a new car! a little basic tuneup, some seafoam, and its like a whole new car!
if you are over 70k miles and had the fluid `changed`~ especially if you had 100k--- thats almost a guarantee for failure- usually takes a month, but with the other fluid in there---
dont say anything about what brand it is----
When the tech or writer hops in the car and it does the immediate trans symptoms, they write up the invoice for warranty- get you a loaner when possible- and say- we will call you in a week.
Or if its still at the shop, have the tech put 9 qts of honda fluid to it, so the correct stuff is there, limp down the street a few blocks- and call the tow truck
Admit to to a fluid change since they will see it!
Good luck
