Transmission Drain/Refill Questions

I am in the process of draining & refilling the transmission x3 on my "00" TL and
I am getting 4 qts plus a little more coming out on each step.
(two drains & fills w/ 4 qts ea. so far)

Is this ok? - All the threads I've read say everyone is getting only 3 qts+
when they drain.

The Transmission was replaced once (7/19/04) and there is no oil jet
on it - Would this mean I have one of the newer units that is supposed to be
a "little" more trouble free?

Thanks.

the replacement warranty trans have the oil jet kit installed inside the case now.
Most get 3 qts per drain- are you running the engine or something?
Also- start with 15 minute drive- then first drain, refill and drive 5 minutes- drain and refill- drive 5 minutes drain and refill- done
Measure whats coming out exactly!
You want to make sure its at full and not ovrfull when you drive

I gave my girlfriend a ride downtown (about 12 mi round trip) and started the procedure w/ the engine off for a little while, maybe 20 min. or so before I drained the transmission.

The first time I got 4qts (filled a gallon milk jug) plus about a third of a 1/2 gallon
milk jug. I put 4 qts. back in and drove it for about 10 min.

The second time I drained I got 4 qts (filled a gallon milk jug) plus a little bit more (less than the first time).

I had to run up and get some more ATF because I only bought ten and I am ready to do it for the third time.

Anyway - after the third drain - and if I get 4 qts + again, I estimate it wil take
4.5 qts. to make up for the total amount drained.

PS: It's kind of hard to read the dipstick because the ATF seems to cling to it. Aren't we supposed to check it right after we turn the motor off?

As mentioned, the transmission was replaced in July of 2004 w/ 35,600 miles on the car. I had it serviced @ Acura in June of 2006 w/ 56,500 miles on the car. I now have almost 75,000 miles on the car which would be about 40,000 on the transmission.

Thanks again.

Thats fine on the drive time and method. Maybe the newer replacements give up more fluid on the change, and you are the first person to report the situation!

To check fluid level- 15 minutes casual cruise drive on freeway- then stop car- put in Park shut off engine.
remove and wipe trans dipstick- insert stick fully- remove and read- should be between the dots

I doubt he has a new design from 04. Sounds like the oiljet wasnt reinstalled.
As to why your getting so much out?? It shouldnt be. Even the manual states slightly over 3 will come out.

I got 1 gallon plus a little on each drain/refill & replaced exactly
what came out - Oh well, guess I got more of the old ATF out and more of the new stuff in.

I would post a photo of the containers but don't know how.
(3 gallon milk jugs & about a third of a half gallon container)

Since I bought the car in July of 2000 & have only 75,000 on it -
doesn't the extended warrantee cover me until May 2008 even though
they replaced the 1st transmisson in 7/04?

PS: What is the torque spec for he drain plug?
I bought new crush washers for both the fill & drain plugs.

Thanks

29 foot pound torque on the drain plug- same for engine oil drain plug.

The cars warranty on the trans is 7year+9 months or 109k miles whichever is first.
The warranty replacement trans has its own warranty (which keeps changing),
and Acura is good about covering those who got a bad replacement unit too.

A gallon milk jug is only a gallon when filled to the very top

Yup - filled three of them to the top plus a little more.

Thanks for the torque spec.
