Brought my 03 tl-nav with 110,832 on the clock to the dealer this morning. The tech said my VIN has an unlimited recall on it. Millage was of no concern. Left in a rental and will pick up my car with new tranny and ECU on Monday/Tuesday.

Thank you Acura for going to bat on this.

Yep it happened today, i wasnt driving my dad was so idk what happend or whatevr, but i did get to experience the symptoms, but failed while my dad drove it and i wasnt with him. It has 78K miles on it, and im sure it is the original tranny. I just got the OEM hips and lips put on along with my new ron jon inspyres, So it just made it to a local tranny shop and ill see what they have to say about it. I have no warranty, if i took it to the dealership what am i looking at price wise for a new tranny installed, or just a fix? thanks.

take it to acura dealer first. unless you have a salvage title, you may be able to get some goodwill coverage to bring it down to the cost of an independent shop rebuild, plus then you get the new case that is supposed to mostly fix the problem. without goodwill....4000+

Buying advice....

I'm considering purchasing a 2000 TL with 68k miles on it. It's a one owner vehicle and I've seen the maintenance records from the dealer where it was serviced consistently. Although it has not had a tranny problem yet, should I be concerned? Should I just avoid this car? I was in the market for a 2002-2004 RSX when I stumbled upon it. Any advice is appreciated.

the age of the car makes it less likely that you will get goodwill coverage, despite the low mileage. they are nice cars, but i wouldn't buy one without being prepared to shell out for a transmission replacement if needed.

OK, Here's my situation. My 02 TL-S was just about to reach 150K last november and I took it to the dealership to change the tranny fluid, hoping to protect this defective trasmission. However, a month later the transmission failed and guess what, I only drove less than 200 miles in that month. I talked to the service manager about goodwill saying I'm still in college and have no money at all. At first he didnt wanna help me because I dont have much service history at there. After I told him the original owner ( I am the second) did all kinds of service at his dealership and I have all the records, he made the phone call.

OK, same result, no help from the honda district representitive. I'll try Acura costumer service myself anyway because I def cannot afford it.

emphasize how much you love acuras and how you would hate to see yours go because of a little design flaw (basically insinuate that if they help you now, you will buy more new acuras in the future). it has to make sense for them to do it, and if they think you're not going to buy another acura anyway, they don't have much reason to help. regardless of whether you actually plan to or not, you must suggest this somehow. i actually do plan on it because i got fantastic goodwill support.

that being said, your mileage is going to make it more difficult to get goodwill coverage. the transmission on my 94 camry failed at 117k miles--my family bought the car new, and it was dealer maintained, and driven gently. no known transmission defects on that car. sometimes it's just bad luck i guess.

cliffs:
your mileage is high so you may be screwed
when asking acura for help, make sure they know you will buy more acuras in the future.

Tranny slip between 2 and 3 on 03 TL

Dealer will look at even though it is out of warranty. Only have 68000 easy miles on it and tranny fluid flushed and changed yearly. Hope the honda rep helps me out. What do you think? Any suggestions..............

good to hear that worked out for you

ask about the engine mounts while they're at it, they go pretty quickly on these cars and you'll save a lot in labor by having them done with the transmission

Thank you for the advice. I tried, but the customer service says no, although I told them I would like to consider a new one after get my degree. I think I have no choice but lose my $$$ now. The autozone reman transmission $1700 would be the one and a shop would replace it for 500. Now I have a couple of problems.

1.Are transmissions for the type-s and non-s the same? The dude from Autozone seems not sure.
2. The dealership says the torque converter should also be replaced (or fixed). Is this really necessary? What about the engine mount.

My 01 has started slipping some with just a little over 71k. I may go ahead and take it to the dealer since I have some extra $ coming in over the next several months. I paid asking price for the vehicle because it was a LGM with the spoiler and ground effects kit, 48k miles, 1 owner (elderly couple) car. Also, there were literally 2 or 3 customers in line to buy the car when I bought it. I paid a pretty penny for it. Since then I've had a drain/fill on the tranny done at 60k as well as had the timing belt service done (at an independent Honda shop).

I am hoping I will be out of pocket no more than $1k on the deal. If I have to escalate matters to the dealer principal I will since I used to work there and bought the car from them.

If it's going to be more than $2k. I will have it patched up and dump it on craigslist (or here if someone wants to do a 6spd swap) and buy something else for around $4-6k. I'm not getting into a car payment again. I also refuse to put 4-5k into a car that's worth that much. I'll just downgrade to an old Civic or something if I have to.

Just bought a 2002 Acura 3.2 TL Type S... was wondering if my tranny can be replaced? It has a salvage title, with 111,250 mileage on it. My transmission is fine at this moment, but probably would go out soon. I registered my VIN on myacura and it is one of the vehicle with airbag issue also along with the tranmission which was never replaced from the original owner.

'03 Used TL

I am thinking about buying one. 80K miles. The 2nd gear tooth problem was addressed. No other recalls on this specific VIN. Felt slight delay/slipping when I drove the car, but not very noticable at all.....is this a stupid buy? Don't want to walk in to a tranny repair/replace.

What about buying a warranty? This car is a private sale-

Thanks-

This was from another thread here:

Hard shifts before the engine warms up. By design, the transmission shifts a little harder when the engine is cold. It returns to smoother shifting when the engine warms up.

Have a 99 TL, and I am experiencing this hard shift when engine cold (from drive to reverse)...but it is a REALLY HARD SHIFT (180K miles, started doing this at 155K miles, progressively got worse) any ideas in this...is it tranny related??

DO NOT BUY THE CAR! any slipping indicates the tranny is on the way out!!!

probably the engine mounts are gone too, pretty common on these cars...but if it's slipping at all i wouldn't touch it

My 99 TL (reverse gear) has had the "hard shift" into reverse (on a cold start) for 30,000 miles. Runs absolutely fine though. I wonder if I am NOT diagnosing "slipping" correctly. I read somewhere here (the thread about "read this before posting about Tranny's") about how the Acura has some electronic type system that helps to slow the car down by downshifting...I forget what it was called...but could it be as simple as that?

The VIN on the '03 that I am looking at is in the 21000 range (last 5 digits)...read where anything after 19000 should be fine.

Thoughts??

the hard shift into reverse is most likely caused by bad engine mounts (a common thing to break on these cars) and not the transmission. slipping is when you are shifting from, say, 2nd to 3rd, and the rpm "flares" as seen below

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q0absLPoMs

(this video brought to you by mod, fsttyms1)

i may be incorrect, but i think when they say anything after 19000 should be fine, they mean that the 21000 VIN is not covered by the extended transmission warranty, yet another reason not to take it IMO.

*Would the bad engine mount be more pronounced on a cold start? Once I drive it 30 miles to work, and then engage the reverse, it not nearly as pronounced...I still notice it...but not something that would otherwise alarm me.
*Easy way to tell if this is a bad mount? If so, what is a typical cost to repair?

*What about "hard" or sluggish shifts....when I say hard, it is not nearly as hard as the cold start reverse problem.

Could the hard, sluggish shifts be the grade logic kicking in?

Hey guys, just bought my first TL the other day and I love it! Although Im a little worried about the known trans issues. It is a 2000 with 277k miles on it. The miles are high as hell but it runs perfect, is clean and shifts great. (I paid extra attention to the tranny on the test drive) got it for $2500 so its not so bad if I dont have to replace the tranny soon. the previous owner replaced it 20k ago, and I have the receipt. I guess ill do the three qt fluid change, and replace the selenoids soon as preventative maintenence. Hopefully this forum can give me tips on keeping this awesome car alive...

Dammit i think my transmission is slipping. It happens in D5 when im doing city speeds around 45. My solution is to drive in D4 in the city and has yet to slip since ive been doing that. Hopefully this save me a thousands of miles. Ive alrdy put on a couple thousand miles driving D4

when i had bad mounts i felt that the jerking into reverse was worse when the engine was cold. they generally aren't more than a few hundred dollars to replace, some ziners have done on their own for less. have a friend rev it in D while holding the brakes as you watch the engine for excessive movement

i don't think so, it's supposed to shift harder when cold but that's about it

Hello all,

I'm new here and I just bought a 2001 TL...after reading the first 12 + last 2 pages...I feel the need to be concerned....The car I bought has about 230,000 KM (or about 142,000 miles)...at the present time there is no slippage and I am loving every aspect of my car. The previous owner had the transmission changed 20,000 Km ago at an Acura Dealership (under the recall he said - he showed me the owner inquiry to show transmission work had been done)...

On wikipedia I read that the tranny's that were replaced after Mar. 2005 were good...is this true? Although I love my car and as of right now it is an absolute BEAST when I push it, should I really be concerned/motivated enough to get rid of it ASAP before I get stuck with a $4000 bill in a couple months?

Thanks.

If the owner just replaced the transmission with a warranty unit, I think you should be OK. I wouldn't push it too hard though, especially on shifts into 3rd (weak)

I had a factory replacement after Mar 2005 in mine and it still failed after I put 92K on it.

damn that sucks...but still better than my 99's first transmission, which made it all the way to 18000 miles

check mounts first, transmission could be ok but if you're on the original engine mounts they are probably dead by this age/mileage

it isn't, we get a disproportionate number of people with bad transmissions, lots of people google the problem and end up here, no other tl owner i've talked to among my friends was even aware there was a problem

I posted this in another thread, but mine slipped 3 times today. I'm steaming! I knew better when I bought the car, so it's my fault. I totaled my 00 TL and bought this mint 01 LGM with 48k, spoiler, ground effects, etc. It now has 72k and the tranny is dying. My 00 had one replaced free because it was still in the warranty by both time and mileage.

I'm taking mine to the dealer where I used to work...and where I bought it from...and get a case opened with Acura. I'm going to try to get them to goodwill the whole thing; if not, I want them to at least pay for the tranny and I'll pay labor. Since I wrote service for them (but at the Jaguar store), I saw tons of customers get free crap just because they bought the car there. Well I bought it there too.

If Acura and the service dept. won't do anything, I'm on the phone with the dealer principal. I'm not paying a dime over $2k to get this POS fixed. I'll sell it and buy an old $3k Taurus--at least I can work on them.

Sorry...I had to have a few drinks tonight and vent.

Severin, you have 2000, from what I remember TL transmissions in 2000 are not the same as in 2001-2003.

I think other members can confirm that all th TL AND TL-P's from '00 -> '03 all use the exact same transmissions. The only differences are part substitutions and modifications to mitigate the issues. Since mine was replaced after Mar 2005 it is no different than a factory new '05 tranny.

Has anyone got new tranny from oil jet recall? The recall says if >15000 miles and discolored = new trannsmission. Can I inspect myself? What to look for? I have 98k TL I want to buy as long as I get new tranny if failure.
