He also claimed depending on what I'd need, parts would range from $600-$1200 at locations north of me and then the typical installation charge on top of that at the shop I'd go to. Does that sound just about right? Also, I was informed but am uncertain about the tranny update... the updated parts, other than for the 5AT, have there been any made for the 4AT?

Oh, by the way, do you happen to have a link to the pictures of the worn parts you were talking about?
well that guy sorry to say is a idiot. You dont just open it up and replace a part or 2. its not like replacing a air filter or TB. If your going to open the tranny for the sake of replacing worn parts you replace all of them. which is a complete rebuild. the dealers dont do that (unless they have a mechanic that works off the clock on the side)
as for the updated parts for the 4??? im sure they are the same, or have been also. I would recomend you look into tranny rebuild shops and get quotes and info from them

And no i dont have any links or pics of the parts that are worn. I never took any

My transmission died

hey all. I have a 03 3.2TL-s and the transmission died at 107k.

symptoms:
-delayed shifting into reverse
-dropping of RPMS
-slipping of gears from 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th
-Ruff shifts between gears

This all happend in about 1 week, I noticed the symptoms, scheduled a inspection and before i could bring it in the transmission fried. All of my engine lights came on, including the gear lights. I had the car towed to acura and fortunately, they replaced the transmission for free!!!- I have not got the car back yet, and will pick it up this week- so far so good. I hope it doesnt die again.

VICTIM # 5,052,556 and a half

Within the last month.....

-Delayed reverse shifts
-Hard Shifts up to second gear (HARD)
-Hard Shifts down from 5th and 4 th gears

Today the CEL, VSA and ! light came on all at once.

After restarting the car, the CEL is the only light currently on. It seems to drive fine still but with the symptoms mentioned above.

I have an appointment in the morning with Acura. I think the heat has some effect on it. No?

And to make a good deal even better.... My Civic tranny took a dump too!!

So.... Acura of Seattle called me around noon that same day. The dude started off telling me that I could keep the loaner for as long as I wanted. I said "awww shiza!!!". Turns out that the tranny is done. Replaced under warranty. I'm gonna be without my TL for weeks. So sad.....

My tranny went out at 103,000 miles. Acura client services asked me to send in maintenance records. Just so happen while I was at the dealership. I was looking in the glovebox for my insurance and looking for something in the manual and found a service record from the previous owner who claimed that the tranny was slipping at 60,000 miles. A technician drove it and said that the tranny was slipping but no noticeable damage at that time. Needless to say I got a new tranny and labor with a 12 year & 13,000 mile warray for 0$. I got a receipt for $3500 dollars though. So, be sure to get it serviced and tell anyone you know if they have an Acura TL have them take it to the dealer and let them test drive it even with the slightest hesitation and be sure they record it and give you a service record. So if this happens to someone they will have it documented.

Why weeks? What was the reason that they said that? Most people including myself got the tranny replaced in 1-3 DAYS at the dealership. Just curious.

Alright! About to rip out the old tranny for one that works; I hate self labor and getting my hands dirty, but hey, at least it's free. Looking for used trannys down south, found a few with at least a 2 year warranty on it--Parts and labor are covered with unlimited miles so I'll be set for a while. I'll keep updating you guys about my progress.

The dude that I talked to said that I might have it back by the end of this week. I don't really mind either way. I have two other cars besides the loaner TSX. I would prefer that they take their time and do it right.

Answering my own question because I just got the tranny replaced under warranty on the Acura TL 2001, under 45000 miles. The ECU is part of the deal, they list it as faulty and therefore replaced under warranty. So far so good.

Just like;

1. Installing a tranny cooler.
2. Frequent fluid changes.
3. Using syn fluid.
4. Not using sport shift
5. Driving easy.

removing 2 doors doesn't help the tranny last longer.

I had a CL before we bought the TL. That bastard had more problems than I ever wanted!! I reckon all '99 to '03 Honda V6 cars were not so friendly. What happened? What single Honda employee can we blame for all these V6 mishaps?

I had my 2002 tranny replaced about three weeks ago and it has started making a constant droning sound that varies with speed. I've only got 45K on the car and about 4K on the tranny.

I've owned 10 Honda and Acura vehicles, probably put a combined 900K on cars and motorcycles and this is the first one I've felt like I wanted to dump. My kids have 98 and 99 Accord EX's with autos and their trannies are questionable, acting up, and making noises. Seems like Honda knows how to make a superb manual but hasn't quite mastered the automatic stuff yet.

They should reverse engineer some Toyota/Lexus units....

99 TL Tranny Failing

I purchased a 99 Tl that was a total loss that was repaired at 155,000 miles. From the day I purchase the TL the car has always driven funny. The first thing I noticed was the engine moving around to much will shifting. So i replaced three motor mounts. I noticed a little bit of change in driving but it still shifted erratically. I didn't want to believe that the tranny was gone because it thought the problem was not for this year Tl. I finally then took it to the dealer and they told me that the tranny is slipping between 1-2 gear shift and 2-3 gear shift.

I then called acura customer service. I read on this board someone getting acura to pay for half. I spoke to a lady who informs me that the car was taken in by the former owner for the Transmission campaign and the ignition campaign. I basically tell her to put in my situation for review. I finally get an answer and they deny the claim due to high mileage. The case manager Leon Jones biggest slacker ever takes forever to call and is never as his desk. He tells me that the tranny was never replaced under the tranny campaign. How can i get two different answer from the same company? OOOH Well.

My question to all is if you do replace your transmission outside of Acura, is there anything extra other than just replacing the transmission that needs to be done. I spoke to a Acura technician that recommends installing a Transmission cooler and also resetting the ECU of the vehicle because the computer learns the Transmission. I might be able to get a transmission from another Tl from the indivual who i bought the car from.

My TL was taken in during the transmission campaign. But the Trans was not replaced. The dealership installed an oil jet that was supposed to help the problem. I'm assuming that the same was done with yours.

This is the exact problem I am having right now. I also thought right away "feels like a slipping clutch". That was yesterday. Today, the problem is getting worse, and it feels more like gears slipping against each other. It's the 2-3 shift, and the RPM do shoot up a little when I shift. The 3-2 shift is also hard if I punch it at the same time.
SS is used about 50% of the time; the car has 54,000 miles on it right now. It's my dad's car, but I only use SS when I drive it, and I drive it quite hard (lots of WOT at times). Think 7200rpm in 2nd.
The car was built July '02. Is the tranny really shot, and is this build date covered by warranty?

I'm in trouble if I have to replace mine under warrantee again, which it looks like I'll have to, because I managed to piss-off the service manager at the dealership. In case you're wondering how, it has to do with answering the customer survey honestly regarding other work I had done at the same time the tranny was swapped. Work that I was charged for but was not performed. In addition parts were left off the car!

Anyhows, the service manager has essentially banished me from the dealership for trashing him in the survey. I'm not going down without a fight though. They'll have to have security haul me out of the place.

Tony, if you're telling the truth in the survey, then you have every right to go back there for warranty service. If they don't do the job right, then they need to get in trouble and correct their problems.

Go to hondas web site and register for owners link. It will tell you wether or not your covered. You are so close i dont see it being a problem any ways. Get it there asap.

I had a 1999 TL. My tranny went out at 118,000 miles. Acura said it would be $5,000 to replace. After 2 nights of crying myself to sleep the new tranny is now costing me $48,000 which will be paid off Sept. 19th 2011. I ended up buying a 2005 TL with Navi. Best thing I could have ever done! Fun and great car. I do miss my 99 (it was my 1st car) but to be behind the wheel of the 2005 makes me forget a little about my old baby. My best advice is to buy a new TL!

I think we are covered, as the recall notice showed up on OwnerLink. But it said Status: Fixed. Wierd. Anyways the car is booked in for next Wednesday. Hopefully it will last 'till then.

Katy: we are hopefully looking to get a new TL soon, maybe in about 6 months. '07 will be out by then.

So, I have read previously that the newest trannies are supposedly problem free. Is this true?

the recall was only for the oil jet kit. It doesnt mean the tranny was fixed. It should say wether or not your covered under the 7year 100k warranty extension. And yes, so far it looks like the new updated ones are lasting? only time will tell

Hey man! Leon Jones helped me out. I showed him documentation of continous preventive and maintenance service and he hooked it up. You have to threaten to throw away your acura and buy a bmw or a lexus. I am telling you. I live in Atlanta and i got a free tranny under warranty and free labor on a tranny with 106,000 they even g before by mistake.

So far no tranny problems on mine 2005 with 30,000 miles. I have not heard of any problems and my dearlership has said it is fixed on 2004 and up. We shall see Yes '07 will be out soon. I tend to upgrade with the total body change seeing that in '08 the '09 will be out with a new body I will upgrade in 2010 - giving that I have no problems with my current '05

Forgot to mention, when I had my 2002 in for the tranny work one of the junior service managers said that at one point they were doing 6 a week!

Damn that was expensive for that 2005. Did you get your car at John Eagle Acura? Oh and...whereabouts in Katy do you live? I grew up in Grand Lakes off of Fry Rd. and 99

$48,000? There must have been an assload of negative equity... combined with the fact the car's transmission was screwed. Still $5000 < $48000. Yikes..

$48,000! That's $12,000 more than the most expensive, new, 2006 TL at my local dealer.

Talk about irony....last night on the drive home from the beach, it happened...slipping between 2nd and 3rd - hard shift into 3rd, followed by harsh shaking......and now it's happening every time I drive......talk about jinxing yourself.....

So, I called my ACURA Dealer, Smithtown ACURA, spoke with a girl in the service department [who I must say sounds hot] told her what was happening and she says " OK...Bring it in next week...the tech will diagnose it - but I'm going to go ahead and order a new transmission for you today." At this point I was impressed. Then she says that she'll make sure that there is a comporable loaner available for me as well....Now I was really impressed.

I have to say - that is overall great customer service........now lets just hope that the new tranny lasts.....

Let me clear that up ... If you read I said I will pay $48,000 at the end of Sept. 19 2011. Meaning when I'm done paying my car off it will cost me $48,000 - the joy of financing your car and not paying cash. All in all I'm saying I would not have gotten a new car if my tranny never went out so it is costing me that much the total of a new car.

Right but how much did that 05 cost? Even at MSRP of a bit over $35k, after financing it shouldn't have been $48k

It was 36,800 (with Navi) then I got the 7yr/100,00 mile warr (another 2,000) and I got payment insurance (if I'm ill and out of work for 10 days in a row they make the payment for another 2,000) plus a few things I added on. I have a 7.4 % interest rate. I'm paying $613.99 a month for 6 years plus I put $4600 down. I also added lojack to the car.
