Do I have to be the original owner to have the tranny replaced if it ever has this problem? What mileage is the limit for this type of replacement?
Can I have it replaced even though I have not experienced any problems with the tranny so far ?
Just got a letter telling me about a potential out-of-court settlement on the Acura transmission problems. The big winners are the lawyers. The second-place winner is Honda (they extend warranty 9K and still get to decide who gets a new tranny. The loser are the owners. I am sending a letter Objecting to the settlement and will withdraw from the settlement. Comments?
PS Acura will fight you tooth and nail over replacing

What planet do you live on? My dealer is fighting tooth and nail to not replace tranny.

Not all Acura dealers on this planet behave in the same manner. ;-)

Some forum members have reported that Acura has replaced transmissions that were clearly out of warranty. Can you take your car to another dealer? You might also want to call Acura's national customer service number.

Good Luck!

How many times are you going to post the same thing about you just getting a letter. ANd for your info, Most dealers will replace teh tranny hassle free if its showing symptoms. I know mine did on the ones they replaced (and one was at 115k free of charge no hassle)

I got my 2006 TL on Wedsday, August 2, 2006 with only 4 miles on it. And I beleive it was by the 5th that my transmission broke. It wouldn't go into reverse, it would just make a grinding noise, and i noticed the grinding sound around teh 2nd day, but i thought that i just let go of the brake before it had shifted into reverse, and then once when i was backing out it sounded like i ran over a soda can, but when i looked there was nothing there.
So we we're stuck with pushing it out of parking spaces for the weekend, which was quite embarrassing. I don't really remember what the mileage was when it broke, but when we brought it to acura first thing in the morning on the 7th it was at 349 miles.

We were very disappointed especially since my dad wanted to return it, but I've wanted a TL since they redesign in 2004, but we were able to get some nice things from acura to make up for it.

We havent had any problems with the new transmission.

(sorry for the long post)

So your saying your 3rd gen (2006) tranny went? Also you should be in the 3rd gen area. This is the 2nd gen.

Possible percentages of failed trannies

talked to a acura service manager today and asked him how many

trannies actually went......(i had also talked to a honda service manager

about 3 weeks ago and asked the same question)......both said

they didn't know, but when pressed they guessed 2-3%......

now they may be lowballing.....but i got the same answer twice...

....a starting point i guess, the forum would make one think its 50%

You guys are making me nervous.

Second Tranny installed @ 80K, now have 154K
Love this car! All I've had to do besides the free tranny was the timing belt/water pump @ 105K - oh, and some spark plugs.

Heading to Conn from Wiscinsin for a hockey tournement over the holidays - now I'm going to be nervous the whole time, feeling for every little jitter.

Quick Noob Question guys. I just picked up my 02' TL Type-S this past week. I have also just registered on the Acura owners link and was looking into the recalls and saw the two posted trannie issues. The first one listed is listed like this:

Description 00-04 CL & TL A/T RECALL
Date 6/29/2004
Type Safety Recall Campaign
Status Fixed

Does this mean that the recall has already been performed? Also the second recall reads like this:

Description 2000-03 TRANS WARRANTY EXT
Date 9/27/2002
Type Warranty Extension Campaign
Status Open

I'm also assuming "Open" means that the previous owner never brought it in to have the warranty extended. Am I right???

The first recall is for the oil jet kit recall. Fixed means it was installed. The second listing is for the transmission recall. i had my tranny replaced but the status stayed open, so I'm guessing it's not something thats considered fixed once changed.

Well my 02 tl tranny is on its way out sadly got 130 000km on it noticed it a while back but now its getting a lot worse. Makes a huge bang going into reverse, very slow shifts at high rpm slipping, loves to hold gears for no reason and harsh down shift when the hammer is down oh well lets see what candaian dealerships do for me its covered to 160 000 km out here went and checked.

Another problem

I have had 2 trannies replaced, one at 55000 and one at 85000. Last night the tcs light came on...it had a hard time shifting out of third...and when it did it shifted hard. I turned the car off and haven't had a prob today. This happened once before a few weeks ago. also noticed a weird noise when turning slow lefts? Will acura replace the tranny again over 100k... or is it up to the dealer? princeton dealer said the class action suit clearly only covers to 100k...then its my problem. any insight??

well you can add my car to the tranny-going-on-the-way-out club. It started slipping between 2nd and 3rd gears, a whining noise, and the check engine and TCS lights came on. I have 66,500 miles on my car. I've heard bad stuff about Paragon Acura in Queens so i'm planning on taking it to Valley Stream on Long Island; anyone have experience with their service dept?

Add me too. Just died on Thursday 11 Jan 07. Mine also slipped from 2nd to 3rd. I didnt get any lights but I heard the whining and what not. I went to Acura today and they are not gonna do a good will but what they will do is pay for parts. The total cost with everything came to 3200 and some change. Im only paying 632 out of that total. Plus they gave me a Loaner. Its a nice 07 TSX fully Loaded. I cant complain at all. I will have my baby back Friday. the 19th of Jan.

I've been reading and reading, but I'd like someone to explain "slipping" What's the pause in changing gears? Like a few seconds or, does it feel like you lose power for a second.

Its slipping. Thats the best way to describe it. If you have ever owned or driven a manual trans car it woudl be the equivalent to riding the clutch while trying to accelerate. In the TL as it shifts your still accelerating but between the shift instead of being quick and smooth the rpms will climb between the shift (they arent supposed to jump up when it shifts)

This is how 3rd gear slipping is like. Say you accelerating the car from a dead stop with your foot on the gas pedal. First gear, then second gear, and everything is calm and smooth. Then suddenly the car jerks and slows, accompany with loud engine high reving sound. Now you should know something isn't right because you still have your foot on the gas pedal, the rpm shoots up, but the car just coasting on its previous acceleration inertia. A couple seconds later, "bang" and the tranny jerks into fourth gear violently and then continue to accelerate as if nothing has happened.

Well i'm not sure if i have bad luck or what. Recently joined the forum and started to read a bit. Wouldn't you know it, right before the Xmas break the tranny starts to slip and on the way home i get the suddent downshift and the TCS and Check Engine light on. 2nd to 3rd slipping real bad. Crawled home and parked it. Called the local Acura dealer here in Tampa and explained the situation. They told me to organize the towing and have it brought it. They inspected it the same day i brought it in and said it needs a new tranny. Well duh i could have told them that. With the holidays they couldn't order the tranny for a couple of days. No problem just give me a loaner, and they did. Short and sweet, it took just over a week or so and finally have my baby back. The service manager did call to apologize for the delays. I told him, hey i don't care i'm putting the miles on your loaner and not my car.
Got the car back and it was a bit rough starting. It felt like maybe one of the motor mounts was damaged or something. The start is not as smooth as it used to be. I also did notice on 2 or 3 occasions the RPM's raised up before shifting. I will mention this to them when i take it in for an oil change next.
Anyone else experience these symptoms right after getting the car back from the tranny exchange?
Vince

Class Action Lawsuit Link

www.hondatransmissionsettlement.com looks like the warranty coverage has been increased to 7.75 month and 109000 miles.

Covered or Not?

Interesting thing...I went to that site....entered my VIN, stated that I was not covered.

Per Acura Customer Service, my VIN was not covered on the extension to 100K.

But if I read the actual settlement, according to the chart, all 2003's are covered. Anybody else read this differently?

All 03s are not covered the later makes acura says the problem is fixed and the trannys dont fail anymore.

We've all heard that before. My "later" 03 TL-S had the tranny fail 1 month ago. Same clutch pack issues. Acura covered it totally.

When you say your car has transmission problem,
that's when it's in manual mode, right?

What about when it's in automatic mode, anything weird happen?

I just bought a used one and I'd like to test if it's got the tranny problem.

Thumbs up TOOK MY CAR INTO TODAY (Jan. 30, 2007)

This morning without any warning, my Acura 2000 TL (75,000 miles) transmission while on the freeway to work jerked forward. This happened a couple of times by the time I got to work. I called the dealer trying to get appointment because I was afraid that I wasn't able to make it home tonight. I finally was able to get my car in at AutoWest Acura of Stevens Creek.

It was only 5 miles away, took side rodes to get there, because my car was increasely worst, I have all of the following symptoms by the time I got to the dealership
:

• An abnormally loud noise from the transmission.
• Extremely slow or delayed gear engagement, upshifts, or downshifts.
• Abnormal gear slippage during upshifts or downshifts. (Commonly between 2-3 and 3-4 shifts)
• Erratic or excessively harsh shifting.
• While driving, the D5 indicator (possibly also TCS and check engine light) on the instrument panel flashes.

I was so scared I wasn't going to make it and/or if I would get into an accident. They took me in and 30 minutes later I was driving out with a loner MDX and back to work. The TCS and Check Engine Light was on by the time I got there.

I want to say thumbs up for Stevens Creek to help me so fast, I was amazed. In the meantime I get to test drive an MDX for awhile.

If your car starts doing the funny transmission dance described above- STOP-
Call the dealer and have them send a Tow Truck- they will pay for it
Better than having the worst occur because -it was only 5 miles to the dealer-

Question

My mom's 2002 TL Type S transmission just failed. So if I call the nearest Acura dealer, they will pick it up free of charge and replace the transmission free of charge?

The vehicle was purchased 09/01, has about 30k miles.

go to www.acura.com and find the ownership experience then register your car online by VIN number. That will tell you if you are covered, most likely you are, so you can rest easy tonight

The dealer MUST BY LAW have you sign a work order for diagnosis that says $150
Dont worry, when its discovered to be transmsission - you are not charged for that.
They will provide a loaner car depending on your age (state laws vary) and cars availabilty- on a monday morning dont expect much but you can pick one up later.

Please describe what occured on your failure- it helps keep this page current for those seeking symptoms to watch

I recently had the trans on my 2001 TL done under warranty. You will enjoy the new one!

It not shifting out of 2nd in SS doesnt mean the trans is toast. Its happened to abunch of us (including myself) it appears sometimes there is a hicup in the ECU or something that will cause it onece and a while. Usually by letting off the gas and driving it for a bit it will shift. If you dont have any CEL, TCS or D5 light blinking your trans is most likely fine.

As for what to do when you finally do have a failure? I wish acura would pull their heads out of their ASS and just give all the 03s warranty

im going to start looking for one and buy it keep it on hand just in case and if i end up selling the car ill be like "heres the title and btw ill even throw in an extra tranny look at the bargin deal"

Thanks for the replies to my situation. The symptoms that my parents reported were: the ability to go into reverse, but when shifted to drive, the car would not go. They also reported on the mini gear display, it kept flashing 4 and 5, and the check engine light came on.

I did not experience any of these items because I was not there and I only help my parent's arrange the service and tow of the vehicle because they don't speak English well.

Have another question, the dealership paid for the tow of the vehicle to their facility. Would they pay for a tow back to my parents? The dealership is located approximately 1.5 hours away.

Thanks in advance

Mine just pooped. 89K. I did a tranny drain and fill about ever 10-12K miles too. VSA lights on, slippage like crazy, revving up on the hwy. Classic. Phew, was hoping it wouldn't die at like 110K then I'd be SOL.
