2000 TL 3.2 Tranny failure

Just started slipping @ 79,500 miles. Called local Acura dealer. He said I was supposed to change trans. fluid every 30,000 miles. Didn't say the repair would not be covered but what is this about changing the trans. fluid so often when the manual says 72 months or 90,000 miles. Called another Acura dealer and they said 20,000 miles. Are they running me thru an idiot screen or what. Can they refuse to replace transmission based on this?
$2,000 to $3,000 at stake here.......They're making me nervous about getting this transmission fixed. Will be taking car in today if it will make it. They said it was safe to drive.
Who is responsible for towing if it doesn't make it to dealer (60 mile trip)?
This car was purchased used 1 year ago........

Just don't accelerate quickly and you should be fine. I drove quite a while with mine slipping (mine went at around 80K also). As for the tranny fluid flushes, all that really matters is what is in the manual. They have been pushing 30K fluid changes for some time, but I never received anything officially stating we needed 30K flushes to remain in warranty. Even if they did, they would have had to send it certified mail to ensure we receive it and of course they have not/would not.
You will be covered, rest assured.

A possible contributing factor?

I'm nearing 60k miles on a 2002 TL that I bought from a friend when it had 34k. No problems so far, but I guess it's early yet. One thing that I've noticed is that, in my opinion, the car wants to run in 5th gear in situations where it clearly shouldn't. I discovered this when I took a job where the commute was mostly two-lane roads over hilly terrain, with top speeds rarely exceeding 60 mph. Shifting to D4 made the drive much more enjoyable. And I didn't seem to lose much gas mileage, as my RPMs rarely went over 2500 in fourth gear.

I guess the manual recommends driving in D5 for most conditions. I would respond that the manual was published for a car with a documented history of transmission problems, based on the input of the engineers who designed it. It seems to me that driving at low RPMs (1000 to 1500) could conceivably generate a lot of tranny heat. I don't know if this has anything to do with the problems most people are experiencing, and I admit to driving like the 50-year-old guy that I am soon to become. But I think it's just common sense that 5th gear is for the freeway. Maybe this will help somebody, I don't know.

Actually, since the problems lie within the 2nd gear (rarely) and 3rd gear clutchpacks (frequently) this scenario shouldn't be a contributing factor.

2000 TL 3.2 Tranny failure

Well, here's the latest...Although the Acura dealer assured me that I could "limp it in", the TL only made it about 20 miles on the way to the shop before serious slipping began. It got so bad I had to go in reverse down a four lane highway to get it off the road. Lucky for me the previous owner had the TLC coverage which paid for towing to the dealer shop. This saved me $125 tow bill.

Will find out tomorrow if they are going to fix this without having to argue about it.

Thanks for the repies to my previous post.

The dealer would have been footing that tow bill after telling me it was okay to limp in. TLC ends at 50k miles or 4 years after original in-service date, anyway

I called the 1-800 number on the driver window sticker for TLC & they said the previous owner had purchased an extended 7 yr / 100,000 mile warranty. They said no one had cancelled it and it was still active.

Fossil- I wonder if you bought my old car. Traded it in on Jan 11th for a 2006 Mercedes CLS500. Had 11 trannies total before getting rid of it at about 70K. I bought the extended warranty when I originally purchased the car new. I had expected to keep the damn thing for more than 4 years, but hey, my new ride is SWEET!

I am so sorry for your troubles. I feel your pain!

afterthought...never mind. I read your first post and saw that you have an 00 and have had it for a year. Mine is an 02. I pity the poor soul who buys that car. I traded it for only 10K, so hopefully they won't have paid much more than that for it!

Dealer says all is covered under warranty...except....they said I have a damaged trans support on front (it is liquid damped & leaking). This is a $100 part with $40 labor charge to install. Tempted to leave it as is but will probably have them replace.

Anybody heard of this support going bad? Is this a reasonable charge for replacement?

Hey everyone, I don't know if this is normal or not for auto trannies, but today I was going downhill on a street, about 45 in probably 3rd gear. Well, I was picking up speed, my tranny didn't upshirt, and my revs wents up to as high as 4k, beforoe the hill ended and I braked to maintain a good speed. I was wondering if the trannies were supposed to upshift to maintain constant rpm's, going downhill with no gas being applied?

No. What you're talking about is part of the grade logic system in the tranny controller. The tranny will not upshift in order to help you going a constant speed with engine braking.

Cool Another one bites the dust

Yesterday, my transmission started shifting erratically. Unforseen downshifts, delayed upshifts and then the christmas tree of lights went off on my dash. It looked like a pinball machine.

I limped my 02 TLS with 49,202 miles into Hoehn Acura. Today, the service advisor called to say that they ordered a replacement trannie from Ohio and that I should get my car back on Wed or Thurs of next week.

I asked him to refer me to the Sales Mgr as I may be interested in a trade in on a new TL. They will probably low ball me on a trade because my car has transmission problems!

Motor Mount Charges Added to Transmission Replacement

As a follow up, a transmission miraculously appeared at the Dealership today. The service advisor called and said the car needed a new front and side motor mounts. The costs: $410 and $170 respectively.

I was doing a search and reading about the mounts and saw your previous posts. I am going to save the $410 in labor costs. Thank you!

So yesterday I was accelerating out of a stoplight, when my 2003 TL-P with 104,000 miles on it began to slip around 2nd-3rd gear up into redline. I had my music up loud so I didn't notice I was redlining until I realized that my car wasn't going anywhere and that I was just revving my car in neutral on a busy city road. I pulled (rolled) into a parking lot, shut my car off, and let it sit for a couple minutes. I turned it back on, went into reverse, put it in drive, and when i stepped on the gas, the car just revved up like it was in neutral. None of the dash lights came on, D5 wasn't blinking or anything, but my car wasn't going anywhere. It's at a transmission shop right now. They want to take out the whole transmission and inspect it, and said my bill for a new or rebuilt tranny could be upwards of $4000. As a college student, I definitely don't have this kind of cash lying around. I'm not under warranty anymore, and I'm not sure what to do. I told the transmission shop just to replace the fluid (which is obviously burnt up and brown) and then see what happens from there. Is this a good idea or should I really get my tranny rebuilt or get a new one? I was thinking about getting the fluid replaced and putting a couple thousand miles on it to make sure it's okay and then either selling or trading it in. Any suggestions about what to do? I really don't want to get ripped off...

I would have it towed to an Acura Dealer and then call Acura Client Services to see if they would make an exception since the miles are just over 100k and the fact that your car is an 03. If they won't flip the bill, maybe they would compromise and pay for part of the fix. Good Luck!

I'm getting close to the 100k mark and my tranny shifts ok, its not as smooth as butter or anything but you definitely feel the gear shifts esp 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd.

I'm thinking about taking it in to have the dealer take a look at it and see if they would replace it or repair it...so I'm wondering what your experiences have been like.
i was wondering if you might know how much the dealer might charge to replace the transmission

Well i wouldnt blame that on a bad tranny design, but the rebuilders, shippers, installers. One of them didnt do something right

Got a call yesterday from my service advisor telling me what did go wrong. after the install the transmission they add fluid , but the new transmission already had fluid to the top , so double the amount of fluids killed the new tranny .
he also mention that before they use to get them with NO fluid, but the new ones now are just ready to install .
car should be ready next monday.

normal if its cold weather, the oil and tranny has to warm up a bit, i get always hard shifts in th emorning, just be easy on the pedal when its time to accelerate/shift gears.

Im kinda thinking The fluid would leak out of it with out teh half shafts and Torque Converter pressed in place. It wouldnt make sense to use plugs when it would be easier to fill it after install

My tranny went three months ago here in Turkey (I'm military). I posted my story in this thread back in January. Honda Wroldwide HQ replaced my tranny free of cost while Acura told me they would do nothing for me. I got a survey from Acura a few weeks ago and added a three page letter to it and sent it back to them. I don't think I will get a response. I would take the car to the dealership and tell them to do the work free of charge. If they say no, call the Acura Service number out of Cali. Insist on talking to your "Case Manager". If you get Damon, Tell him Dan says hi. If they won't help you (which they probably won't) call Honda America. Whatever you do, don't pay a dime. And changing the tranny fluid will do nothing. Your tranny overheated like mine and the clutch packs are fried. The tranny can't shift.

104k miles just isnt enough for them to offer you no help.

Tranny is toast at 44449 miles

Hi Everyone,

Well, only 1.5 months after buying my 2003 TL-S as 'Certified Pre-Owned" the transmission died on me today. I was accelerating from a red light in heavy traffic and the rpm's almost redlined as I hit third gear. I nursed it to the Acura dealership (<.5 miles away luckily) and they confirmed a new tranny was necessary. They also said some computer mods may be necessary to make the shift point less aggressive. Is this normal? Does it make the car more sluggish?

Anyway, the dealership treated me well and gave me a 2006 TSX loaner to drive until the replacement is finished sometime next week. But, now I am concerned about the quality of the CPO inspections. I had heard about the tranny problems on these cars before I bought it, and the dealership showed me the service records indicating that the extra oil jet had been added under recall very early in the cars life. I thought this was supposed to fix the problem?!!!

I hope this does not turn into a problem like others who are on their 3,4, or 10th transmission replaced. I am the type that buys a car and drives it until the wheels fall off. So the 100,000 mile warranty doesn't impress me very much. And just to clarify, it is 100,000 miles on the car, not the transmission right?

Thanks for letting me vent anyways.

104k miles just isnt enough for them to offer you no help.
well i wish you had posted this one day earlier, because the day before you posted this i took it into my dealer and they offered to pay for half the fix, so i'll have to pay around $1500. im just going to sell the car after this because hearing about trannies going out 5 days after having a brand new one replaced. AHH I HATE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS!!!!!

I wouldn't pay them a fuc... damn dime for a replacement transmission at 104k. That is NOT acceptable.

I'd ditch the TL after that experience, too. There are better things out there.

What's up everyone. Just had tranny #2 replaced at 33K. Good times.

Had an '05 TSX for 5 days. That car is solid, solid, solid. Too bad it's a 4 cylinder.

I can tell my tranny is starting to flaw some and it started when i had acura flush the tranny. I have an icebox and comptech cat back exhaust...does anyone think that these two mods will keep acura from covering the tranny replacement? PM me with details
