Tranmission Problem

I'm planning to buy a 1999 Acura TL Type S. He said the transmission going to need replacement. Could an Accord fit or i have to get a regular tl tranny?

If it's a 99, it's not a Type-S.

You'll need a 99 4 speed trans which are hard to find in good condition. You may just want to get it rebuilt or go all out and do the 6 speed swap. How much is he asking for it?

not a bad price if the car is otherwise in good shape. Have you driven it/does it drive?

Have a private shop put it in the air and look under and over everything- brakes especially
Is it a salvage title?

See the Off Topic link at top of every acurazine page- click that and scroll down to Private Sales- cars from members for sale have their own section there
Buy from someone here if you can, at least they cared enough to join a tech help forum.

I agree, you are only in for headaches if you start your acura relationship off with this one! 01TL is absolutely right.

Alright just got back from driving the TL. I give the body 7/10 because there was a dent on the door and the front and back bumper was kinda crusty. When he started the motor it didn;t seem to stay alive so it shut off. The second time it stayed on after a couple pump on the gas. Both rear strut was blown but everything in the inside was pretty decent. I asked if he had paper on the motor but he will see if he can get it.

OMG you cant still actually be considering this car!!!!

I hope you have a spare 5000$$$$ laying around to fix all the stuff thats going to crap on it.
Struts are not cheap, and you will need to do all 4 at $400-1000, plus if they are blown- that means the car has been bouncing around on the springs for some time....
- corrossion eats computers, engines that dont start without effort and die----

are you a glutton for punishment, or just messing with us???

Don't buy it, you WILL regret it. Find another TL, there are lots of them out there. Think about it, the car runs like crap, the body's beat up, the rear struts (and probably the front too) are shot and the paint's probably not very good. This car was not well maintained (if at all). You're gonna end up hating it because you will fix one thing, then something else breaks. As I said before, don't buy it you WILL regret it.

thats unusually cheap- CAVEAT EMPTOR= BUYER BEWARE
as I said before- if you like a car- call Acura at 1-800-382-2238 x5 and have the VIN handy- ask them for any warranty repair history- ownership records= where the car lived before- number of owners- transmission replaced?
the trans recall is a different issue than the failure prob- recall to install oil jet kit needs to have been completed- that was issued in 2004~

Have you looked at cars from members here? - in the Off Topic link at top of page- click there and scroll down.
You can also post a Want to Buy ad in that section, and be checking the local honda/acura/import specialty shops. The people you would use for a big service, many have customers cars for sale- at their shop or a pic and ad for it.
You know that car was well maintaned!!

If you want to test drive and see a few- hit the car lots instead of private owners
