Too Much Oil?

Hey guys,

I thought I lost about a quart of oil so I added some and it turned out I didn't need a quart of oil. I have read multiple threads saying that adding a quart of oil is okay because people use it for autocrossin, but I have also read that it is bad and can lead to a motor not being lubricated properly. Right now the level is about |...........| this much above the maximun line. Is this okay or do I need to drain more oil out?

Thank you!!!

I could never get the art of taking just a little bit out.
it all ended up out.
if you really feel uneasy about it, you can do a fresh oil change.

always remember to check your oil when the engine is warm.

None that I could see. I just dont want to go through the hassle of removinga little oil if what I am over is acceptable.

I thought it was best to check the oil when the motor is cold? Before starting it up.

Thanks for the comments!!!

An easy way to drain small amounts of oil is to just take off the oil filter and dump it. While it is messy, you only need to crank the wheel all the way to the right to remove it.

Hi David,

It is never a good idea to be over full on oil. Unless your car burns it and its just a safety measure. But, I have never seen a 2nd gen TL smoke blue from the tail pipe. So drain a little out and make the 3.2 truly happy.

Won't the oil keep pouring out once I remove it because of the location of the filter?

Thank you!!!

Not unless you remove the filter while the car is on, but you probably know better than that. There will be a bit that leaks out, but its a very small amount compared to the contents of the filter itself.

Just siphon it from the oil dipstick. That's how Mercedes have to change the oil.

Filter idea is probably a little easier. Just get some plastic bag to cover up the filter, and then take it out. It's going to leak everywhere. But it won't just keep leaking if the car is off (no oil pump).

It should be fine, but then again its only a five minute task.

I would NOT recommend driving a car with 1 quart too much. Too much oil can lead to problems.

Like said above Turn your wheel to the right and remove the filter and drain the oil out. Put the filter back on start the car for a little bit to refill the filter and remove and drain again. You may need to repeat this step a few times CHECKING the dipstick for the correct level!

And NO, oil will NOT continue to pour out with the filter removed.

to me- the risk of having the filter not reseal- after removing the 3 times it will take to get that 3/4 of a qt over back down near full:

I would open the drain plug and let it nearly fill a clean 1 qt container- larger if you have.
example place the regular drain pan on floor, insert clean small paint can-coffee can so you can get an idea of how much is coming out

Its not that fast when cold, plenty of time to fill the small can and install plug
As soon as you insert the plug it stops draining

The crush washer is important- if the right type is used,
many buy a flat copper washer or even plastic (groan)
the proper washer does actually compress and crush as torque is applied, 29 foot pounds for this bolt. Making them a 1 time use seal and replace it

now ck oil level - if low, you can add back from the catch can!
pretty hard to go wrong on this job

the little over we are doing with a 5 qt oil change is way less than what you have indicated

auto-x racers are throwing the car around in a way that displaces oil from the pickup tube, some cars will run higher amount to compensate, then change the oil,, or at least lower it, before driving home from the track

How tight are you putting your filters on? Mine have never gone more than 1/2 turn once snug. Doing this the filter barely needs to be on and i wouldnt worry about it unless you are just reefing the thing on.

Im more concerned with the cheap rubber seal found on many oil filters

assuming this one has been on several months, there is the potenial for a leak
after repeated resealings to start engine- remove filter- drain small amount of oil and reseat, repeat repeat repeat--then drive another few to several months

for all that- just pop the drain plug!!

Note: oil level is chk cold or several minutes after warm shutdown
you want all of it in the pan for measuring-

One way or another, drain out some oil so it's at the correct level.
Filter seal should be just fine, unless somebody hulked it down so tight it distorted it. Just inspect it while it's off. If you're paranoid about it just check for drips for a day or 2 after you do it.

You guys are just over-complicating this whole thing. The more I think about it, I realize that the only logical solution is to drop the oil pan.

naw, just drill a hole in the bottem of the pan, use some gum to plug it back up!

got to be sure your sarcasm is in red or some fool may take it as valid statement

^ Remove oil Filter and Drain it a couple of times so you don't have to mess with the Drain Bolt on the Pan.

Welcome Salex290 !!!
There's a dipstick which is normally used to check the oil level within the motor.

Just curious......what was the code that led ya to believe that any type of oil was low ???

To check the tranny fluid.....drive the car for awhile and make sure that it shifts throughout the gears. Once warmed up to operating temp, park the car on a level area and shut the motor off, then pull the tranny's dipstick to check the fluid's level.

How much oil did ya add ? Where's the smoke coming from ?
If unsure , check owner's manual or seek mechanical assistance !!!

If you just remove the filter first you will remove about 1/2 to 2/3 of a quart of
oil and then it will stop. Check your O ring then put your filter back on. You should always check the oil when the car is warm and wait about 3-5 minutes of engine being off for most accurate oil level check.

And check on a level surface - an incline front/back or from side to side can change the reading by a half quart.
