Terrible Clunk from Park to Reverse

So my car was parked on flat level ground, and when I shifted from park to reverse, there was an extremely loud clunk as if something was banging. Then I let go of the brake pedal and noticed that the car was sitting as if in neutral and not moving backwards as it usually would in reverse gear. When I attempted to tap the gas to try to reverse, it made a grinding noise and did not move. At that point, I was really pissed to hear the noises, since I got the tranny replaced a few months ago and only put like 2k miles on it since then. When I shifted from reverse to park, it made the hard clunk noise again. I then waited for a little while, put it in reverse, and it worked like it regularly would.

Any idea what's going on here? Do you guys think my best bet is to tell the dealer and have them look at it?

Thank you all for your help, all advice is appreciated.

That's exactly what happened to my car when I put it in reverse, in addition to 3rd gear slipping, when my tranny crapped out.

thanks for the advice fsttyms1

...and Ed, so this was also one of your car's symptoms before your tranny blew huh? i'm on my 2nd tranny, and i'm at 34.5k...i feel another dealer visit coming soon, just don't want to get stuck for 2 weeks with the KIA loaner they gave me last time ...well it's all good, i'm just thankful that we have the warranty.

It does sound like the warning signs of a transmission. Now if it were just a clunk I'd say engine mount... but that's another topic.

In my 4 failures i never had that before a failure, Seeing that the failure in our trannies is just the 3rd gear clutches. Nothing from them should be causing a crunching.
