my gf has a 00 tl, now once in a while regarless of weather it likes to turn over and start but when it does it shakes vigorously and the rpm goes up and down (well below idle) then it dies, but if u start it again it does the same thing but wont shut off the engine just shakes u do this a coulpe of times and give some gas it eventually goes back to normal. i can think of many things but i would like to know if any1 has faced similar problems and if they have whats the fix. (btw this is after tune up , t-belt and battery change.)

Does the RPM bounce up and down repeatedly? Any Check Engine light?

It may be a Idle Air Control Valve. Throttle Position sensor, EGR related. You could take off the rubber tube and look into the TB and see if its carboned up. It probably wouldnt hurt to clean it any way with TB cleaner, and clean the TPS sensor and the IACV

 

maybe the spark plugs are getting carbonized(?) up, and when u start it its hard for them to get a spark across and once it runs for a bit and gets all the carbon deposits off, its all good.

 

He said he had a tune up. I would expect that it involved spark plugs

 

but said that he changed the batt and the tbelt.

 

I had a similar problem when I had my timing belt changed not too long ago-the problem ended up being the valves werent adjusted correctly.

 

Every once and a while the car starts funny. Typically when I've been listening to the radio while waiting for my wife. When I start the car up its a little ruff and then smooths out.

I just put up with it.

I have the exact same problem... can u tell me wat u did? or how u go about fixing it?

 

he hasnt responded with out suggestions or results.
Did you read any of our suggestions? Any of the symptoms i listed?
