should he have sealed just, the Outside

.just wondering...I had the transmission solenoid pack, changed, and he broke the gasket, so...he used the Right Stuff, as one. Now, my question is... should he have sealed just, the Outside, of the transmission solenoid pack, or should he have covered it like the original gasket, like this? http://i37.tinypic.com/e5qsnc.jpg

He "should" have used a new gasket but seeing as he didn't it should be sealed exactly like original gasket. Hopefully he didn't use too much and get some of that crap in the system.
