Rotor and pad combo

Guys, I'm looking for a solid aftermarket brake pad/rotor combo. I'm not looking for ultra high performance. I'm just look for something that is going to give me dependable braking, and decent wearing. Also, I need something that isn't going to break my wallet.

Suggestions? Thanks in advance, guys.

I recommend searching. Its a beaten to death subject. I like rotora and green stuff. Many like brembo blanks and satisfied pads

Go to the Black Market section of this forum and look under Sponsored sales

Those vendors not only pay to support this website forum- so it is free to us,
they also have been around and dealing with Acuras and other cars long enough to know what is good and what is not.
Brakes are the most important part of the car. I dont care how fast you can go or turn, if you cant stop- and stop RIGHT NOW when needed- it was all a waste
(still grumbling how wife totaled the Maxima because it needed 4 more feet to stop than there was available space ahead,- good side- got the TL)

Sure you can put the stock replacements from any good parts store on it- but the rotors are a critical element in the deal too
Then the pads- Since the good replacements are 70 bucks anyway-we have fancy brake pads- and the Hawk HPS High Performance Street are only another 25, well....(price on fronts pads 95- rears were 58)
If you need brakes now get the NAPA rotors and the Hawk brake pads
That will still empty the seats when you need good brakes

If you want to upgrade a bit- because the factory rotors are known to be less effective than most aftermarket ones- Go look at post from vendors Excellerate and MrHeelToe
and PM or call them for ideas.

and as fsttyms1 said above- use the search feature on this forum for brake pads and there will be every story good and bad- dust ratio versus braking power, noisy or not

Welcome to the Acura forum

Many thanks, guys.

Sorry, Kris....I posted it while I was at work, and I totally didn't think about searching. My fault.

I wanted the same thing for my car also. Nothing ultra performance but just like factory. I just purchased OEM Blank Brembo rotors with Satisfied Pro pads...I'm going to be putting them in next week so I'll let you know how they are.

Hey, Kris.

Last time I went with Brembo blanks, and some cheaper pads, and I wasn't too satisfied. It's been a year, and the Brembo's are already shaking like crazy. I'm wondering whether or not I should even waste the time and money to have them turned. So I'm still undecided about the rotors.

As far as pads go, I think I'm going to try the Green Stuff pads.

Were teh brembo blanks for the TL? The rotoras have been extremely successful on the TL. I-Rotors lasted along time for me before as well

Yeah, they were for my 99 TL. They were fairly solid for six months or so...now they're junky. I may have to try the Rotoras.

Where can I find I-Rotors? I know I google them, but I figures a vet such as yourself must know where to get them at the best price. Thanks, man.

I bought them directly from irotors.

Contact our vendor Excelerate for rotora.

A key to making sure any last is to torque the lugnuts to 80 ft/lb If you ever bring your car in make sure that its done and not driven on with a impact gun, even if they use torque rods for it. May be in your best intrest to pick up one (can get them for under 100 bucks) and do it yourself after any service

Hey I just went to the dealer today to get a brake flush and they checked the pads for me. They said the pads on the rear had 3/32" left and need replaced soon, but the fronts still have 8/32" on them. I just bought the car off someone else about 3weeks ago. Anyhow, shouldn't the fronts be worn closer to the that of the rear? I was thinking about getting Hawks of EBC yellows on the front, with slotted rotors. Anyhow, not sure if I should just wait until the fronts wear out and do the whole thing at once though. Is it normal for the rear pads to wear that much faster?

My thoughts exactly, thats the condition my car came in.
Had about 30k on replaced fronts and 68 on the original rears.

Hawk HPS pads with your choice of rotors- pads avail Pepboys

I like Racing Brake rotors from vendor MrHeelToe, others are Brembo fans
On the cheap? the American made rotors from NAPA auto parts work well
enough for everyday driving.
They may be from the OE supply division of Racing Brake- checking into that

YIKES! Didn't mean to bring them up.

Ended up going with the Green Stuffs.....and I'm just turning the Brembo blanks I currently have.

Thanks for all the input, guys.

I went to pep boys and they tried to talk me out of those pads. They said the car doesn't need such pads....lol! I was just getting a price on them and the green stuffs. I think all I need is a good OE replacement pad really, my rotors are still fine. The previous owner didn't drive it hard. What I'd like to know from someone is whether or not they should be ceramic? The dealership wants $289 parts+labor, but I think I'll do it myself. For the first time ever.... Anyhow what does anyone think about satisfied pro ceramics or EBC ultimax? I can probally go another 5k to7k before I absolutely need to replace the rears. Thanks guys!

Cant go wrong with either of those pads. Both makers make great pads.

Hey thanks a lot! totally appreciated, especially coming from someone who seems to know they're stuff. I'm gonna call the dealer to find out if the OE pads were ceramic or not and depending on their answer will determine which of those two pads I'm gonna put on. thanks again!

I recently installed EBC Green Stuff pads and Brembo OEM rotors.. very happy so far. I think the initial break in coating is finally wearing off, so less initial dust than when first installed.

The OE's aren't going to be ceramic....At least, I'm pretty sure they're not. I have a friend who's using the Hawk's and he swears by them. I'll have my Green Stuffs this week, and after I have my Brembo blanks turned, I'll give my ultra special report.

Yup, Green stuffs and Satisfied pro pads seem to come highly recommended and both are semi-mettalic, which is what the dealer told me I should use. I'm gonna try the satisfied pros this time around though, just ordered them a few seconds ago in fact. If I need rotors I'll be getting the Brembo blanks, but I think I can get away this time with just having them turned. Thanks for everyones help and honest opinions!!!

I'm in search for new rotors and come down to two. So, in your opinion which one will you pick...

Rotoras or IRotors?

Neither
Go to the Off Topic section here Sponsored Sales and see MrHeelToe

www.racingbrake.com

Look there and see why these rotors rule and MrHeelToe has a package deal on them now

The factory pads are ceramic- because they make less noise.
With hi performance rotors the Hawk pads- a semi met. made of carbon-ferro are the way to go for awesome stopping

My choice for brake pad & rotor combos are Akebono ProACT pads with standard Brembo rotors. I just changed my dad's 96 TL today and that's what I run on my 99 TL

The combo is $150 or so delivered from TireRack.com.

Are there better? I'm sure there are, but this combination works very well for us and doesn't cost a fortune.

An impact screwdriver is a great investment if you're ever going to change rotors, then a tube of antisieze for the screw threads I'm sure will help the next time that I change them.

No matter what combo you choose, take your time when you're doing this job. Double check ever bolt you took off is torqued to the specs when you put it back on, check your brake lines that you haven't twisted them or ANY extra bolts when you're ready to put the wheel back on !

Enjoy!
