Removing stupid plastic door protectors

The title says it all, when I purchased the car it came like this, I wish i told them to get rid of it before I walked out the dealership. I guess the previous owner was real carefull of the car because it has the plastic black moldings on the door also on the wheel wells.

I tried to take it off but it has some kind of black tar/glue. I am going to take if off but before I do I figure I'd ask if anyone has had experience with this, I am sure I can use that tar/bug off and get it off but just want to double check and see if there is a specific way to take it off with out damaging anything.

Thanks in advance to any help.

Heat it up with blowdryer or heat gun (sun if you are in TX)
pull off the piece slowly
Goo gone and or WD40 to remove adhesive
Polish and seal
