Rear right thumping...

I was not able to find anything when searching so I thought I would ask fvor some advice.

I can't recall exactly when I started noticing this noise, but what I'm getting is a thumping sound like something is lose and clunking.

I have ff type 1 coil overs. I have taken the wheel off so many times trying to see if I can see something rubbing, hitting or lose, nothing.

It happens only on the right rear and it happens when going over bumps or cracks on the road, not really when the shocks are being compressed so I don't think it's the shocks. Any suggestions?

Good call, I eliminated everything from the trunk though. Everything.

ck the sway bar end links,,rubber part often broken on lowered and aggressively driven cars

if thats the problem. replace both sides with MOOG brand from parts stores everywhere
Better quality and easier to tighten correctly

Swaybar end links, top hat bushings, brake pads (look to see if your rear calipers are frozen or not) control arm bushings.

When you take off your wheel and "look" do you physically yank and try to move things? If not Start.

I tried physically moving everything in the general area that would be connected to the wheel. The coilover is not loose I try to move it and cant.

When the car is stopped I try to compress the rear by pushing up and down o the car but can't get any noise out of it. Nothing would budge when I tried to move it. Would end links and bushings be noticeable if they needed to be replaced?

I did, nothing looks off. I tried moving, pushing and nothing would budge, nothing is out of place.

Maybe taking off the coilover is the next step.

Before you start any disassembly, look real hard at the sway bar inner bushings. Try prying on the sway bar with a good sized pry bar. If you can get the bar to move in the bushings, replace them.

Just replaced the sway bar end link and the noise is still there. The top middle screw on the top hat of my ff coilovers is tight.

What do you guys think I should do next?

Take your back seat out, jack up the car on that side and then look at the top of the shock where it comes thru inside the car. Have someone lower the car slowly and see if you see the upper half move at all. If it does the bushings may be shot. Other things like said before are calipers? Or lower control arms. Under load they may be moving causing it (i currently have that issue on one side, not surprising since they are original with 450k lol)

Little update:

I swapped coilovers from left right and sure enough the noise followed the coilover.

Going to be sending it back to get it checked out. Will update when I find out.

When I got my struts replaced, the rears were thumping but good, and squeaking like a basketball game - turns out the tech, no longer employed there, installed the bushings inside-out, with the conical part inward. Took about three or four tries for them to actually fix the problem on all four corners.

Keep us posted, bud...glad you figured out it was a defect. I was going to suggest checking the 2 bolts on the top of the assembly.

Yeah it's such an annoying sound that I wanna get it handled right away, but there's a meet locally I wanna go to so I can wait one more week lol. Hopefully the warranty process goes smooth with function and form.

That's not good...i'm sure they'll handle it quickly. Did you buy through our vendor? Maybe he can help handle the fix?

So I sent the "defective" coilover back to F2 after isolating the sound to that one specific.
I just got a call from them letting me know that the shock is good, it is not blown or defective. John who was helpful in assessing the coilover told me that the noise I was having could most likely be that spring was not aligned correctly with the top hat thus making the thumping noise, also my preload was not right, dont know how that would relate to the noise though.

In any case, hes said he would adjust everything and get it shipped back to me today, im like awesome!!! He then lets me know that he needed $20 for him to ship it back to me, wait..... what? John was very helpful, fast and efficient but he would not listen to me when I kept asking why I would have to pay for shipping for something I did not break.

Am I in the wrong here guys? I did not touch with anything but the height and preload, never touched any of the springs or top hat. I cant afford the down time so after repeating to him 3 times I dont feel like I should pay for this, I gave up and said ok to get the coilover coming. Ok, rant over.

Installed the revised coilover and still have the noise.

Really at a lost for words. Don't know what the issue could be. Back to the drawing board.

Well, it's not your fault...but it's not his either, I don't blame him for asking for $20 for shipping.

If preload was wrong on that one, is there a chance it's wrong on the others?

Top bolts are tight? On a 3G, they are hard to get to.
When preloaded and set, does the spring land perfectly in the center of the shock?
Is there a bumpstop that might be taller than the others?
are your endlinks on your sway bar tight/ok/installed?
check the bolts and the upper and lower control arms, balljoints etc...see if anything moves freely...
mufflers...make sure none of the hangers have come loose
lugs tightened properly

Since you sent it in to F & F...I'm assuming you installed your stock suspension (or at least that corner) back on the car during that period...did the noise go away?

Any updates op? My right rear also clunks, but only over bigger, harder bumps. I also have ff 1, ht spec.

Yeah but I didn't see why I had to pay, I payed for a product that is not living up to reasonable expectation. I guess me working in customer service I was expecting something different, if it's my product I'm selliing I'm responsible for it to be right.
I checked everything man, replaced links and even swapped sides and the noise followed the coilover.
They offered to send me a new shock body but I'm so frustrated with this individual issue that I'm just putting my music up and am ignoring it since its not blown.

@dino 81- mine does it on cracks also, but no noise on compression or on the highway. I'm just whatever now, I'll save up for something better down the road.

Thanks for the help guys.

How do you know its not blown? Can you take it apart and see if it compresses/rebounds properly?

also, is it possible that if the preload is set differently, that you have spring slap?

I sent it back to the warranty facilities for Function&Form, for them to look it over. They called me after testing it saying it is not blown, they set everything back to factory settings is what they told me.

Yeah I saw that but you never know how honest people are. I don't know how easily those come apart but I would check for oil on the shaft behind that dust boot and compression. Sometimes you can tell if you rock the car on that specific corner until you build a steady rhythm and let go.......see if the side in question reacts the same as the other.

check out the brown rings, they prevent the cluck noise you get when the spring coils hit each other. If your damper is weak then your spring could be making the noise. Maybe wrap something on them for a short ride and see if it stops. It's a long shot, but if you're bored one day!

anyone think the control arm bushings may be the issue? as in the Toe adjust and "camber" arms. Mine makes the same sound as well;only on hard bumps as well. No other noises, but my alignment is way off due to frozen toe arms. Im thinking maybe the bushings in these arms are causing that slight thump.

Go figure....this is happening to me now. Loud as hell, checked everything. If i open my trunk and stand in it and jump up and down(I did this in the middle of a busy parking lot) I can just barely hear it. When driving, my music can't even tone it out. Fuck these piece of shit coilovers....2 months old and they're already shit.

I used worm clams on my muffler hanger, it wont budge the slightest bit. I thought thats what it was too, but I've tried everything...its unbearable. I'm just going to replace the coilover and send this busted piece of crap back to F2 and hope they reimburse me. Kidduce...how loud is yours? Mine is pretty embarrassingly loud, and I have to crank my music fairly high to drown it out. Even when I hit a crack in the road....just like you said, its like the strut barely even has to compress.

This is the only other thing I will check before replacing the coilover. I see some slight play if i rock the car...not when rocking up and down, but if i push it side to side. I also jack my car up under the control arms where it meets the subframe. Its too low to put the jack elsewhere.

@YEEDATOY, man its not horribly loud but the weird thing is that on the highway I cant seem to feel or notice these thumps. The thumps are noticeable really only in the street.
