rear lights not working
1999 acura tl:For some reason all of my rear lights stopped working. I went through inspection this morning and noticed this. Prior to today they were fine. The only thing I can think of different is I used my emergency brake during inspection. Can this cause brake light failure and how do I fix?

All the lights or just the brake lights? Did you check the fuses?

Just the rear brake lights, all lights are out except for the two clear lights near the top of the housing. these only come on when gear is in reverse. not sure why they failed all of a sudden. fuses appear to be fine not sure which ones control the rear break lights? any help is appreciated.

When you turn the lights on the tail lights dont light up? Or only when the brake is applied? Do the blinker lights work?
If you arent sure which ones work the brake lights then how are you sure they appear fine? There are 3 fuse panels on the car. hHich ones control the tail lights are in the manual (i dont remember off the top of my head)

I'm sorry for the confusion, when I turn on my headlights, all of the rear lights come on. My signal lights (right and left) work also. Do you think it has anything to do with the switch located behind the brake pedal. I had time to run a few more diagnostics yesterday and the fuses are fine. Your input is valued, thanks

So the only lights that dont come on are your brake lights. If that is the case first check the brake light fuse. If that is ok then i would look at the brake switch. Do you have any problem getting the shifter out of park and into drive

I have been using a small allen wrench to shift from park to other gears. Once out of park, just fine. What is the meaning there? Also which fuses are hHich or are these relays?

You need a new Brake Switch....Its about 30 bucks from Advanced auto and takes only a few minutes to change out.
Check the DIY section for instructions....
Basically, when you press the brakes, this solenoid tells the brake lights to go on, it also lets the system know that you are pressing the brake pedal. The system does not allow you to shift out of park if you are not on the brakes... since the switch is fried, when you press the brakes the computer does not know, so it does not allow the car to shift out of park. Also, be careful when driving, until you replace this you will not have brake lights.

Your brake switch is the problem. Replace it and your problems will be fixed.

check your fuses

The odometer lights is a different problem than the brake lights. That's a problem with a small circuit board in the gauge cluster. You can fairly easily pull the cluster out and replace the board for around $50 if you do it yourself.
Also keep in mind that the brake light bulbs have 2 filaments in them. A dim and a bright one.
There is a fuse in the engine bay fuse box labeled "small lights" (from what I remember) - check that.

Are the front side marker lights and license plate light working with the headlight switch to on? If not then it could be the tail light relay which is in a box just above the brake fluid reservoir. Black rear relay on drivers side
