problem with fuel guage reading?

I've just noticed this after my last visit to the gas station.

After I filled up I noticed that my fuel gauge isnt reading correctly. The needle stopped 2 1/2 notches below full. I was thinking that I just needed time to get up to full cause sometimes it moves up to that mark slowly but the next day it was still at that point. So I went back to the gas station the next day to top off thinking that the pump clicked off too early the previous time but same thing happened.

Does anyone else have the same problem?

Im not sure if it is the fuel sensor, the gauge itself or something entirely different that's causing me to get an inaccurate reading.

any insight would help. Thanks.

Just like you assumed, It would either be the gauge or the sending unit. How to test with something that minimally off?? Does it read accurately the rest of the way to empty as driving it (like when the low fuel light comes on is there roughly 3 gallons left?

The symptoms you describe sound just like a bad sending unit.

On a related note, around here a few yrs. ago some fuel w/ excess sulfur (I believe that was the problem) got distributed to some stations. It screwed up the sending units in the cars that used it & the fuel dist. had to pay for repairs of the affected cars.

This had happened to my acura legend and I had to replace the fuel sending unit. It did fix the problem. Bought used fuel sending unit for $50 and installed myself. Took 1 hr. to complete.

Yeah i might take a look into that. Are the fuel sending units connected to the fuel pump or does the tank have to be dropped?

I did fill up on base previously to this happening.

Not likely an issue. I've been running regular for a while now. Sometimes the units just fail.
