Power steeing fluid capacity

Hi folks, have a 2001 Acura TL with over 300K miles. Temps last few mornings have been near zero. Two days ago son started car and power steering squealed, but after car warmed up no more issues. This morning, he goes to start car again in near zero temps and no power steering whatsoever. So thinking the pump is shot. He's going to pull into his garage to warm the car up and see if problem persists and further troubleshoot if it does.

My question, anyone know if you drain as much of the power steering fluid out as you can, probably can't get it all drained out, how many ounces does the entire system take? I need to know how many 12 ounce bottles of the Honda fluid to purchase. Thanks!

It should be just under 1/2 quart for a fluid change. The entire P/S system holds a little more than 1 quart of fluid.

To clarify, the reservoir holds a little less than 1/2 quart. If you're going to replace the fluid by disconnecting the return hose from the reservoir and turning the wheels from lock to lock while the engine is running until no more fluid comes out, you will need about 3 bottles of fluid.

Thank you!! Has anyone tried rebuilding these power steering pumps? I thought I remember seeing a video on how to rebuild, will try and find that and check difficulty level. Local auto parts has a rebuilt MasterPro for $228 which sounds high. I'll bet the guts to rebuild are probably no more than $20.

Yes, there is a DIY rebuild video on YouTube.

It's pretty involved but will save you a bundle of money if you go that route by replacing the seals.
