Please Help With My Tranny Problem!

Hey guys!

I have just bought an used 1999 TL off a private sell. Everything is great about the car. But im starting to think that the tranny is going to die really soon. Because when I step on the gas peddle. The car would have "jerky" acceleration and when I shift from Parking to Reverse the car would just "shake". Soo im guessing that the tranny is going to blow soon?

How much is it going to cost to fix my tranny?

and I heard there are some others in the posts where they were going to swap it for a 6 speed? Can someone please help me with this. Im really scared that it will die one day when im out on the road. And i need to know if I have enough money for a new tranny too. T_T

Thanks,
VNP (22 and broke)

some more info would help. How many miles? If you dont have a problem with it actually shifting between gears it may just be your motor mounts. (as they have caused symptoms like that)
If your not that far over the mileage limit you may be able to get acura to good will part of the trans to make things cheaper.

wow, thanks for the quick reply. It has 250,000 km. But the trans is going to die i think. It shifts fine but sometimes when you dont warm up the car in the morning the shifting can be a lil hard. But not too noticeable. Just the major "jerking" when I accelerate the car and the lil jerk and delay when I put the car to reverse.

How much will it cost me to fix the mortor mounts?

or how much will it cost me to fix the tranny (if that broken, i doubt acura will do it out of "goodwill")

mounts you can replace yourself for about 200 or less for them.

If its the trans it will cost 3500 and up

Sounds like the computer warm up program is working when cold- it holds 1st nd 2nd longer revs and may feel jerky for a few minutes. Thats to get the engine warm faster so it can switch to lean running mode- not full rich warmup

Check the motor mounts- fsttyms is our Guru and knows these cars really well
get a free owner manual here- should help you alot

If you have a USA car- register here

Almost 100% sure that it's the motor mounts. Sounds like they're really bad too. Get those replaced first before you do anything with the transmission.

Thanks a lot guys, I took it to the mech. and he said it was the motor mounts. After reading around, I heard its rare for the 99 TL to have tranny problems right?

the 4 speed automatics were reliable- the switch to 5 speed and the issues began or worsened. If yours has lasted this long - its fine, Just replace the motor mounts and the car will be like new

I just replaced my motor mounts-front and pass. side. Made a world of difference in engine/tranny smoothness. Easy fix.

The front mount is about $100 at online acura dealers and $120-130 at your local dealer
The passenger side mount is about $30

Your tech should have said which ones you need.
Most often is just front, but the side and even a trans mount can also have broken while taking up the slack- as it were

There is a total of 5 motor mount and trans mounts

If the mounts are broken thru- its being held in by stressing the other mounts and is not sitting correct position- that stresses other parts
Go to the dealer and buy them right now, ask for a 10 percent discount, and you will put their name on acurazine as good people~
Not really hard to install- just takes a little time

And its more fall OUT than... Off.
They assemble these cars from underneath,
thats why nothing is reachable from the top... with all the layers of your skin remaining at the end of the job.
