Oh dear transmission, you begin to scare me!

My '99 tl (106,506 miles) seems to drive fine, no slippage feel or anything. Then again i have not driven it between gears 2 and 3 lately. I decided to check for dtc codes for the hell of it a week ago with an actron code reader, i got code P1739 "Manufacturer Transmission Control". I can't find any info on this code. Any tips?

comin -

i googled "honda P1739" and got a bunch of different leads. it appears that this is a common issue covered by honda to 109k miles. I found the following info:

P1739--malfunction with 2nd or 3rd gear pressure switch

2000-2001 Accord
1999-2001 Odyssey
2000-2001 Prelude
2001-2002 3.2 CL
1999-2002 3.2 TL
and certain '03 3.2 CL and TLs

The warranty is now 109,000 or 93 months (whichever comes first) per the Class Action lawsuit RG# 03099677. Refer to Honda TSB #02-062 for information.

I would call your dealer ASAP and ask.

How do you not use 2nd and 3rd gears in an automatic?
Drive it in Drive and see what happens-

call the dealer and tell them the trans feels funny, slow reacting, just not as nice as it always was...before the extended warranty runs out. You are probably on the edge, and even if a bit over- acura is helping in big way

Yes, a 1999 TL has definitely reached the 7 year/9 month (93 month) limit on the extended warranty. 2000 TLs are already hitting that time limit.

But, as 01tl4tl noted, Acura has offered partial or full coverage for many "out of warranty" cars.

Get your TL to your nearest dealer ASAP. Even if they don't uncover any problems, you'll have documented some concerns about the transmission. That documentation could help get you coverage if the transmission fails down the road. That fact that your still under the 109,000 mileage limit on the warranty could work in your favor.

I fear taking it in at the moment for two reasons:

1) This code came after i put a low end ATF fluid (ProLine Dexron III) in to fill up the tranny as it was below the "low" line. (The manual says that a Dex III can be used temporarily, but this tranny's been running on it for 2.5 weeks now.)

AND

2) I erased the code from the ECU to see if it would show up again. (So i would have to wait for it to pop up again before the dealer can see it.)

Should i just take it in as is regardless, or should i swap out the fluid to genuine Honda ATF (basically wasting $40+) as well as wait for the code to pop up? I know the dealer will get pissy if they find that "non-genuine Honda ATF" wasn't used. It will be their main excuse for not wanting to repair/replace the tranny (or any of it's sensors) for free.

a waste of money would be throwing another 3 quarts at it and thinking that will be all honda fluid in the trans.
Say nothing except- it was LOW on fluid, and now you are at the dealer ASAP
end of story. Techs are like doctors- let them make a diagnosis, not you tell them what wrong

If the fluid is low- that suggest a leak or other problem- a symptom of failure!
Did the fluid on the dipstick smell burned? Does it now?

Unless you have personal recent experience dealing with acura on a trans replacement-
then you cant say they will look to deny you
Look again at the post by phee, all he did was say - I love my TL, poor student- need help, and they covered his 99 transmission no hassles

I still want to know how you get an automatic to skip gears?

Even if you shift to 5 from 1, the computer runs it up thru the gears in sequence
Its not like a manual trans in this respect

There's really no way for them to know if you used a non-honda fluid in the transmission. Even if there was, it's only been a couple weeks and it states in THEIR manual that it can be used temporarily until you get the OE fluid. Don't even mention it to them. As far as the code goes, I don't think it matters much as long as the transmission is showing the symptoms of a failing transmission: delayed upshifts, delayed gear engagement, etc. I took mine in last week and I didn't have any codes. They test drove the hell out of it (50 miles worth), reproduced the symptoms, declared it defective, and a few days later, BRAND NEW Transmission!!
