Question noise from pully side

99 tl and for some reason im getting some kind of noise that is coming from the pully side. like something is loose or something not knockin. i asked my dad to take a look at it and he test drove it and took a look at it and said that it is fine and that the noise is coming frome the motor. i rev it to see what was the noise but it doesn't seem like the higher the rev the louder it gets. have any one experence it or can someone help. my dad is really good with cars just to say.

I would take a mechanics stethascope and listen to the water pump and the AC idler pulley
Did you have the water pump and timig belt replaced yet?Thats due around 100k miles give or take a little

I think you're probably hearing that damn AC idler pulley. They go bad on these cars. I was going to get mine replaced on my old TL when I did the timing belt but it's totaled now. At least the new one doesn't make that noise!

You'll notice the noise when you turn the A/C on (if the climate control is on, chances are the compressor will run). The pulley is located right above the compressor itself.

Have you ever heard any type of automobile pulley when the bearings were shot? If so, it sounds exactly like this....because that's what's happened. Start the car, turn the climate control off, then turn it on...when the compressor clicks on, does the noise begin?

when mine went it didnt require the ac to be on to notice- it was loud with the hood open or closed!
The mechanics stethascope for 5-10 dollars- harbor freight tool or parts stores carry them.
Listen to each part until you locate the problem.
I dont care how close you place your cell phone to the car- I still cant diagnose over the ethers!
Water pumps ~usually~ leak out the inspection port on the bottem of them. An inspection mirror will help with that check. WP can fail, ac tensioners fail- pulley for t-belt can fail
They are just cheapazz bearings- and hi revs probably dont help their lifespan
My ac pulley was making noise at 45k according to old papers that came with the car- dealer said it needed belts and ac pulley...work not performed.
skip to 68k miles and a shop that has been caring for the car for 3 years gets it ready to sell, installs new belts but not tensioner- deededeee
skip ahead a few months and I wont drive with that noise and my hand is too big to do the job myself.
A private shop did it and no more noise

Change the idler pulley first. It might just be that. A lot cheaper and easier than the water pump. Unless it's due for the 105K service, then by all means go to it!

that pulley you can see at the top front of the engine- there is a belt that winds thru there and the tensioner pushed on the outer side of the belt.
I dont know how the tech got his hand in there to remove it, mine wouldnt fit so it was worth $85 for the part and 1.5 hours labor to me. Some members may have advice on DIY, but if you dont know where to look, this is probably a good time to visit a private owned shop- not the dealer.
the tech was bleeding from a few places afterwards- that told me to be glad it wasnt me!!

NO.
But, to change the water pump, you have to tear down the side of the motor to the point where you might as well change the timing belt and a few other items. It's not a small job to replace the water pump.
