Noise only in fifth gear...

Everytime I am in fifth gear and completely let off the gas petal I hear a grinding/whining noise. If I shift to any lower gear the noise stops. No noise also if I press the gas even a little bit. Someone please help. Just had transmission replaced less than two years ago completely rebuilt. Took it back to the shop thinking that it was the transmission again, they test drove it, scanned for codes (none), and shrugged their shoulders while saying nothing that they could she(as far as transmission). Please help

Sounds like a torque converter problem to me (not an expert but lots of reading on here and mdxers). Is your trans rebuild still under warranty? If so the shop might be brushing you off. Were they able to duplicate the noise?

I also had a slight grinding noise when lightly or coasting the gas pedal my belt tensioner was shot. Noise was gone.

My car seems to be doing the same thing. Was there any update on the issue?

Still having the issue. I just avoid letting go of the gas pedal when in 5th gear by downshifting. Still no idea or other issues. Any ideas?

Seems like it may be something with the lock-up releasing ?
Since your original post, have you tried a drain & fill of the tranny fluid ?

I'd be curious to know if Honda fluid was used during the rebuild. Has the shop tested the tranny's clutch pressure ?

A service manual would help you to better troubleshoot the problem, especially if the rebuild is out of warranty.

I am going to do a 3X3 soon. I don't remember if they said they used Honda fluid. Just finished last EGR cleaning and troubleshooting that now. As you have replied to that post as well. Thank you by the way for your responses to both.

I still have not had the time to do a 3X3 yet. However, I was changing the oil today and noticed that the torque inspection plate (I assume) is missing. I have no idea how long it has been missing. Can this cause an issue? and what kind of fluid should I use for the trans?

Honda DW-1 - the current tranny fluid. An improvement over the older original fluid.

Hmmmm, for all the more that it costs, ya may wanna consider replacing that cover plate.
It's gotta have a reason for being on there, maybe just to inspect, but.....?

I did a 3X3 and still have the same issue. Although it shifts much better now. I also cleaned the shift and torque lock solenoids

If the tranny is shifting good, it's really difficult to pinpoint the issue. May just have to wait and hope it does not get worse or cause problems. I think your tranny guy took the low road, but hey....it's been awhile, so you're on your own. Get a 2nd opinion !!!

That piece is only to un-bolt the torque converter out of the flywheel... Much like a manual Clutch plate.
It doesn't do anything more than cover for dirt and debris for coming into the TQ housing and trans main seal.

You issue sounds like a faulty TQ lock up mechanism.. Im not speaking about the Solenoid tough, The TQ inside of it when it locks it moves a certain part inside of it to lock or basically make the fluid even between the 2 plates so it becomes something like a 1:1 ratio when locked.. You issue reminds me what happened to some MDXs with the whiney TQs.. They will only make sound while locked at 5th gear.

I think if you don't want the sound your only option is the same as it was in the MDX scene = Replace the TQ.. or Live with the Sound.
