Metallic Clanking Sound on Bumps
Metallic Clanking Sound on Bumps
This is probably obvious to your experts, but what would be the cause of a metallic clanking sound when hitting small/moderate bumps or dips? The sounds only comes when the front driver's side tire goes over a bump/dip, and it's a metallic sound kinda like hitting an aluminum bat or pole. I recently upgraded my endlinks and shocks/springs, and that didn't help. Could it be the control arm?
Yeah, the clanking has been going on for a year maybe, and I just updated the endlinks/sways shock/springs but the sound persists.
I'll check for rub marks/bare metal scrapes on the arm.

I'm gonna have to jack it up and crawl under there to find out what's going on. I changed the endlinks and swaybars with the eibach kit, not sure if the bushings you're talking about jra are part of that.
I had a similar problem and it was the upper control arm that had a bit of play, replaced it and noise gone. The way I found out was by jacking up the car on both sides evenly and kicking the tire in the front at different angles until I heard it. Hope this helps

Thanks to Skirmich, my problem is solved!
The slider pins that came with my legend calipers were different than the TL ones. I also noted the upper Legend slider pins didn't float as they should--they seized for a second before bouncing back after being compressed. After replacing, no more annoying clanking on every bump on the road.
The TL has two different slider pins - A brass one with flat edges and a grey one which is uniformly cylindrical. The correct placement is the brass/edged pin goes on the lower end of the caliper, and the smooth grey one goes at the upper end of the caliper.
The rebuilt Legend caliper I bought (Rockauto, I think) had two identical edged pins. This is probably why the upper pins were catching momentarily--they're the wrong size.

Is this confirmed ?
Hey guys is this true that our 2nd gen TL's have 2 different slider pins for the brake caliper/pistons one being slightly smaller ? Just wondering because i did my first brake job on my car a few days ago and didn't notice the slider pins being different sizes. I wouldn't want them to fail on me if this is correct.....
