ISSUE: Noisy Legend Caliper!

Hello AZINERS!

Well a New Problem has Arrived before we switch this old 2012 goodbye! The Problem: Noisy Legend Caliper!

How its Noisy? Well it seems the Floating Bolts (AKA Sliding Bolts) are a little bit skinny VS the OEM and it seems they have an Small gap between them and the Holding Bracket making them "Float" too much! If I hit a small bump or the road is too rough the Caliper wil make this High Pitched metallic sound clanking all over the place...

Sadly I sold my OEM Calipers with the OEM Sliding Bolts + Legend Bracket so Im out of Free Options! Im asking you Aziners what can I do about it? I was going to stuff some grease in them too see if the problem go away but I think my only real solution is going to be: Get the OEM Sliders which is a PITA becouse Autozone doesnt carry oem only Duralast crap sooo..
Any Solution that doesnt involve the Stealership sold me a complete Caliper Rebuild Kit which is around 59.99 (Complete Kit; Includes Metals!!, Not the Seal Kit which is Cheaper) which includes stuff I dont really need (Seals) and I would need 2 Rebuild kit for the 4 Sliders.

Thanks for Any Reply!

Try to wrap the pins in a thin shim material. I have this available at work if you want I'd send you some free. Ill just stick it in an envelope and mail it off. Do you have a guess as to how much extra room there is??

Just get the Auto Zone Duralast kit for $6-$8. They will work fine-it's not like it's a rocket part or something, just some metal bolts

You should be using the TL brackets and bolts with the Legend calipers

Not really "MilwaukeeDave" but if I have to guess the Legend Sliders are 1mm skinnier than OEM becouse they dont really move too much if I shake the Caliper By Hand they only sound if I hit my wheel with my Foot a little hard..

@AlanW
Actually some Aziners have used Succesfully and Recommend using all New Hardware except the Bracket which you cannot really Use...
By Look both Sliders where the Same too so I got a little bit too greedy..

Glad I kept my stock brackets, calipers, and pins! If this happens w mine I'll swap em all back. I just used the new ones cause they had fresh grease to save my grease. $$

I could send you some .015 shim stock which when wrapped around the pin would = .03 which is just a cunt hair shy of 1mm. That way if its less you won't end up oversized.

I wonder if this is what I'm hearing too: Metallic Clanking Sound on Bumps.
I have the legend calipers but I only here the noise on the driver's side.
How exactly did you diagnose it down to the sliding bolts?

I have the O.G. TL pins, the ones for the Legend calipers I got were different, shorter and a bit skinnier. I bought brand new TL pins when I did my brakes.

And as for the metal clanking on bumps, I have that issue as well, intermittently.... I lubed the shit out of all contact points and it lessened, however I think the real culprit is the snap-on hardware that the TL calipers require..... I think I read somewhere the Legend calipers don't need it..... but I haven't tried taking them off yet to see how everything fits/works.

I only have the Noise on the Passenger side, I did an easy test.. Jack up the side you think is noisy and Hit the wheel with your feet (As imitating a Bump) It should make a Clanking Sound a very high pitched one, in my Test it did the Same Noise I hear when Im driving it so Bingo!

The only thing loose on the Steering Knuckle is the Caliper itself (Well Floating) so go down there and hit the wheel with your fist! the sound should be coming from the bracket or near the Caliper hence = Sliding Bolts = too much Gap.. Also I confirmed it on a Brake Shop, They Advice me to check the Rubber boots on the Bolts but they are Brand New. So? Sliding Bolts are to Blame....

I have the Duralast Sliding Bolt kit, Tomorrow Ill give it a World and See if the Problem goes Away...

I got just the Legend rebuilt calipers without the brackets, but the calipers came with complete hardware kits that included the sliders. They were the same as the original ones in the TL bracket. I did use all of the new Legend hardware because it was exactly the same as the existing TL stuff. (and shinny & new)
Only sound I had was a real high pitched sqeeeeeeking noise on one side that was coming from the spring clip in the center of the caliper that contacts the backs of the pads was rubbing the rotor edge. Straighted that out a bit and all good and quite now.

The StopTech 309 pads I bought for the front are not exactly "low dust" as advertised either.

Did you grease them before you installed them? They are supposed to be greased before you install them so they continue to "slide"

Yeah I actually had the old Grease from the OEM Sliders and the Legend Sliders had alot of grease out of the Legend Bracket... Im on the job of changing them right now with the Duralast.

Hey Skirmich, did changing the bolts eliminate the noise?

Oops Forgot about this! Holiday Shopping is Hard....

To MightyQuinn yes it did! I measure the Legend Caliper Bolts and they are 1.12mm shorter in diameter vs the TL Bolts (Duralast Kit) so that was the gap making sound with bad Roads...

Kit Cost 16 bucks w/tax and took 2 days to arrive.

Thanks Skirmich--this solved my problem too.

This was the root of my clanking noise when hitting bumps. The slider pins that came with my legend calipers were different than the TL ones. I also noted the upper Legend slider pins didn't float as they should--they seized for a second before bouncing back after being compressed. After replacing, no more annoying clanking on every bump on the road.

The TL has two different slider pins - A brass one with flat edges and a grey one which is uniformly cylindrical. The correct placement is the brass/edged pin goes on the lower end of the caliper, and the smooth grey one goes at the upper end of the caliper.

The rebuilt Legend caliper I bought (Rockauto, I think) had two identical edged pins. This is probably why the upper pins were catching momentarily--they're the wrong size.

Here's a helpful image from a previous thread:

And here's the original thread.

we dont need the big center spring clip included with legend caliper
they cause more probs... stock tl did not use them

ck the correct torque specs for caliper and bracket bolts
too tight is not good

reminder to flush brake fluid every 1-3 years

No need for that spring you say? There's no good reason why it's used on the legend caliper? Maybe I'll take it out when I paint my calipers.

Bracket bolts are 80 lb-ft, caliper bolts are 36 lb-ft.

If my brake fluid was changed out a year ago with DOT3 and I want to switch to Motul 5.1, how can I make sure I've drained out all the old fluid when old/new fluid is the same color? Switch to Super Blue?

To max drain you must let it drain all night to ensure its completely empty... Even then the ABS pump will have some that it might not come out at first but once you are bleeding it should be drained out.

drain? wtf? flush thru lines until all new clean fluid comes out
its not difficult to see differance
by hand and foot pumping pedal/burp, or suction at caliper works well
20 buck tool at hft does it easyl

never leave lines open!! result is air gets hidden/trapped in abs and must be removed--after a full regular bleed/burp,,brake drive test- fails abs test- rebleed brakes = extra effort

remove MOST old brake fluid, but not down to the lines entering on side of master cyl
use a turkey baster $1 at grocery store
clean screen part
slowly add new fluid to avoid making bubbles, it will lay on top of old
when pumping out -get to all new fluid then a few more times to empty calipers as much as possible

legend pads needed the big center spring to push them down for anti noise
they are slightly different sized than TL pads
