Loud Whining Noise

I have read all of the other threads about whining noises, but none of it seems to match mine. This is in a 2000 TL and the noise is only present when accelerating. It almost sounds like a jet engine taking off, but the noise doesn't continue once you let off the throttle. Any ideas about what it could be? Thanks in advance.

Does it change pitch with RPM? do you hear it only while accelerating or do you hear it at a steady cruise?

Where do you feel the noise come from? the belts, pulleys, the wheels, transmission, or vac line, etc?

I've had the same noise for about 2 months. It is most noticable at 4K while accelerating. The only think extra I have running off the power system is the Ipod adapter, and of course an ipod.

It's really hard for me to duplicate while stopped so I've given up trying to find it.

You probably have a SC and aren't telling us.

So this noise is not present when you are idling?

Does it occur at lower or higher RPMs?

I am calling the pulley on this one.

I hear it best above 4K. Noise is not present while idle.

Thumbs up

X2 I'm calling it pulley on this one too. When I start up in the morning its there and it gets higher and lower with throttle. A search here for whining noise helped me to find the problem.

Is there a DIY on replacing the pulley? What parts do I need to get? Belt to replace at the same time?

Update - it only happens for me while I'm in gear. In park, no noise.

I am suspecting as much will happen. It's got about 75k on this second tranny. I'll drive it until it fails I guess.

It's probably the tranny, i have the similar situation. After I had my tranny replaced by Acura i started hearing the whining. Went back to Acura and talk to the service manager, and he said there shouldn't be any problem. So, not sure if i should believe him or not. Had this tranny for a couple years now.

I thought I'd add something here. When I drive in D4 I hear it the most and in D5 less so.

I'm going to change the fluid in another 3K, so it will have only gone 10K on the tranny oil but it was really dark the last time I changed it.

I'll keep all posted on any developments.

A whining noise, eh? Is your wife or girlfriend somewhere in the car?

Sounds like planetary gear whine. It's not uncommon, especially in honda products. I've only seen one escalate; my daughter had a 90 accord that you could hear from 20 feet away. I bought it with the noise, and over about 50k it went from turbine or sc sound to hair dryer, to blender, to garbage disposal, to "box o' neutrals". If yours gets to garbage disposal, schedule an appointment, and don't travel farther than you'd like to be towed from.
