Key can be removed while still in Drive

'99 TL 123K Miles
I have had this issue for a while and have been lucky the car has not rolled away from me or the wife. I just replaced the ignition switch and this fixed the problem for about a month as well as the problem of randomly shutting off. I can now once again remove the key from ignition without placing the car in Park. Car no longer shuts off randomly so that problem is still fixed but I need get this safety issue resolved. It is an accident waiting to happen.

Apologies if there is a thread on this but I did search and may have not come up with an effective search string.

Thanks!

Wow that's really strange...

Hope someone can come up with something. That's pretty dangerous.

This also happens to me and I have a 2000 tl. I don't think it's a problem but it may just be bad design on acura's part

There was a recall item for the shift interlock on the 1999 TL.

Check with Acura to see if the part in your TL was replaced under the recall. If not, they will install a new one for free.

You can call Acura with your VIN number or you can register your car online at Acura's OwnerLink site.

To those of us who have manual transmissions, it is a normal way of life, not a safety issue. As long as the engine shuts down when taking the key out, i'd like that feature for the times I need to grab something in the house but want the A/C running etc.
Always use the parking brake, auto or manual, hills or flat terrain.

I believe the key is retained in the cylinder by means of a solenoid, perhaps it has failed (or blown fuse). Perhaps a call to the dealer who replaced the switch can help solve your problem.

nhn23, your problem and mine are the same just described differently. I am checking into the shift interlock. BTW, I was the one who put in the new switch.
