Clean it. There's a DIY for the EGR valve in the DIY section. If it's already open and dirty, you might as well clean it. The EGR valve will clog up, and can cause problems. Just make sure that it is ABSOLUTELY dry before you put it back on.

Edit: Nvm, I'm confused...

You just need to take the top part of the intake manifold off to clean the EGR.

Here's a couple links:

you remove the entire intake manifold to clean it, not just the cover that lets you see the crud

DO NOT poke crud thru the holes with manifold installed on the engine and expect no bad things to happen!!!
The main place you are cleaning beyond the ports- is the actual length of the passage from one end to the other

And as long as you dont bend the gaskets you can reuse them.

thats why i was curious about just the cover. well i cleaned it up and tried to clean the main port as much as i could without getting cleaner or crud in it. the skinny runners behind the gasket were completely clogged. looked like a solid piece. runs a little smoother now, but i know im not getting the full effect. ifi can reuse the gasket ill go ahead and run the IM thru the parts cleaner at work, just not paying $40 for a new gasket. thanks for all of the help

Can you make your own from a sheet of gasket material?

its a complex gasket--thats why its so expensive

note- installing it upside down happens- looks right but its not
always ck against the upper cover- it blocks a port there if on wrong
Occurs when removed for service work--gets flopped on bench...

you cant use metal in certain places and expect the seal you need
thats why there are rubber cork fiber and metals of many types are used for gaskets
