I'm a broke college student and all the shops around me are asking for money I simply don't have, so I'm gonna try and replace the alternator myself. Usually when theres a problem with my car, I go to YouTube for a tutorial but I haven't seen anything promising there. All the other tutorials out there are for the 3rd generation TLs, which I'm really jealous since it looks so much more easier to get out than the 2g. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

 

The cars are built very similar, I doubt that the 3rd gen is any easier than the 2nd gen.

The biggest pain to get through the job being either a) handling the auto-tensioner to get the serpentine belt off or b) the detached alternator out from between the engine and cooling fan.

Have you done a search for the service manual? you should be able to find it pretty easy on here (for free).


You should be able to rent the belt tensioner tool from an auto parts store (I just checked).
