Welcome to azine!
thats the right type tool for the job
the slow painful way is by hand with several grades of sandpaper
the modern way is one of the many drill attachments with buffing pads
and some plastic polish
then do a coat or 2 of synthetic car wax to seal the finish
It will look like you totally screwed them up as you are working- dont sweat it- it all polishes back out
go to the bottem of pages here - see the many sections of azine list,
`wash and wax` section will have info on clearing the lens, and other things to restore your baby to better than new

I only used a turtle wax headlight resto kit.
It come's with everything needed and it was cheap.
This time I did my lights, I buffed the lights by hand, and had to buff them 3 times till they were nice.
It was a hell of alot cheaper using the kit than buying everything seperate.

toothpaste has a small amount of grit, fine for eyeglasses and helmet visor fixes (guess how I know)
ziners have reported metal polish as safe to use on plastic
or buy plastic polish--close to the same price
Both have abrasives and act as a lubricant when combined with a drill mounted pad that acts as sandpaper--
most kits are under 10 bucks, ck wallys, target' or parts store

Toothpaste didn't really do anything for me.
I am going to try the 3M kit on how many positive reviews it has.
Turtle Ice polish also helps clear scratches and oxidation in plastic.

i like the crystal view kit. It has sealant and not just wax.
It might not be a crack, more like a leak at the seal between the housing and ballast. Just need to replace the foam gasket. Unless the chrome inside the housing is starting to flake off, you don't have to replace it.
