Has your transmission died? Trying to get numbers...

This thread is not for symptoms or questions. What I'm looking to gather is the following:
  1. Has your car ever had the transmission(s) replaced and at what milage(s)?
  2. If you are almost positive or know the car has a transmission after the 02/2005 redesign, have you had to replace that transmission(s)? At what milage(s)?
  3. Please also respond if your car has never had transmission problems and what milage your currently at.
Please don't state any information on warranty replacment, etc. as it's irrelevant to this 'study'.

Please state the year of the vehicle and corresponding milage. If you don't know the exact milage an estimation will be fine.

I didn't see any threads like this when searching. I'm mainly interested in the redesigned transmission and its reliability as well as those memembers who never had a problem (if there are any).

Also sorry to beat the dead horse on this subject, I'm just a numbers guy and would like to see how this turns out. I know it doesn't change the fact that the car has a big problem, but it may be interesting.

Thanks guys!

All u guys that bought the car used check your trans , I bet it is not the orignal..
If the bolts are blue it was replaced.
And if it was replaced it is NOT on carfax or autocheck or the DLR does not know unless it was THAT drl that replaced the trans..
If the DLR switched owners then the same DLR that did it would not even be able to tell.
I highly doubt any of these transes went more then 100K i changed the fluid every 15K and never used SS and drove like a grandma and only got 65K outta the trans!

Welcome to Acurazine.

You can find hundreds of failure reports in the Tranny Failure Thread:

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-problems-fixes-117/tranny-failure-thread-566833/

And, if you didn't realize it already, note that the 1999 TL uses a 4-speed transmission that was not updated in 2005.

Here's my TL's info:

1999 TL

Original transmission replaced at 173,000 miles

~62,000 miles so far on the replacement without a problem.

Well, I should have written "as far as I know, the 4-speed transmission was not updated in 2005".

Perhaps another forum member can confirm that.

Yeah I have read through most of them but it's hard to get a feel for those that were replaced at X milage on Y car. I have heard only 3-10% of the transmissions will fail, but if you look at just the threads it seems like 95-99% lol, hence why I'm trying to see if we can get alot of responses and crunch some numbers (maybe even see the average life of the transmission, old vs redesign).

Thanks again guys! Keep them coming, the more people that respond the better number crunching we can get. Look forward to learning lots from you all and hopefully helping out as well!

The numbers are going to be skued like that because of the internet affect.
Boards like this are problem-driven, in that most people come here because they have a problem, Either that or because they are enthusiasts really into their cars & always looking to discuss, cuss, improve, fix up, and mod..etc.

I would think the vast number of TL owners don't come on boards like this. They just take their car to a dealer or repair shop when they have a problem, get it fixed, and you won't hear anymore about it. People who have not had any transmission issues aren't pissed off about it and aren't going to seek out boards like this to post they they have no problems.

Do you have a figure for the total numbers of TLs sold for all the years of the transmission problem?

idk, i bought my car brand new with like 20miles on it and the only owner. Oil change every 5k, use SS once in a while, drive 70 miles everyday mostly on freeway and so far it runs 125k miles with no tranny issue.

Well the one I'm buying tomorrow is number 16,181 and it is still under the extended warranty. I'm sure we still will get somewhat skewed results but if every TL owner on here posted we may get in the ballpark. I was going to use the transmission problem thread, but obviously it has people with problems and some of those are people that just signed up on the board for help (not active members). Also like I said I really want to see the reliability on the redesigned trany.

Sorry but im going to have to agree with alanw. This/these type of threads are pretty much pointless. You will never get a accurate number or a good idea actual numbers. We have had at minimum 20 of these type of threads and none have ever lead any where to any accurate #. The majority of owners dont come to the forum. Those that do are a small percentage.

The 05+ trans while some have failed for the most part are a much more reliable trans with far far fewer problems.

1st owner replaced twice: once at 23k and once (in late Feb. 2005) at 79k. Both replacements by Acura. That 79k replacement was the redesigned one w/internal oil jet kit.

I purchased about 2 months ago at 147.5k, now has 149.5k and no problems (w/about 70k on that replacement tranny).

'99 TL tranny failed at 149,000 miles. It was replaced last year in Nov. I havent had any problems with it yet. I'm at 166,000 miles now.

81,500 miles, original tranny, getting a new tranny from acura within the next week (still waiting to hear back from acura if i get full coverage under goodwill)

this makes me feel a little better, it seems that the new rebuilt trannys hold together much better, i think i am going to change the trans fluid every 15k on the new tranny.

60,000 reported transmission issues to dealer, but they "couldn't recreate the problem"

123,000 Transmission failed (in shop).

I don't have any record of work prior to 50,000 but it had the fuel jet installed on 1/6/2005 prior to my purchase.

I agree with ALANW and FSTTYMS1 no point to these threads about transmission failure. Yes we know our cars have a transmission issue and Acura screwed us. Yes they cover you once in warrenty but then you are toast afterwards.

1st transmission 51K
2nd transmission 71K

Got it repaired at and traded it at 122k. Wanted to keep her cus she was still in mint condition after all these years and engine was still great. But decided to trade her for an E60 550i. Will be selling the wheels soon on the Black Market and the Black Emblem kit as well so stay tuned.

Okay, I'll play:

2002 TL-S

Original transmission replace in Jan 2005 at 50k miles as part of recall (no symptoms of failure)

Still running now at 95k miles.

(at 55k they replaced the solenoid and harness assembly free of charge.)
