I was riding with the mechanic who did my tranny and he seemed pretty assured that this transmission would last a while. He was explaining some stuff I already read about like the new 3rd gear clutch pack and other things.

Then he suggested that I need to get the timing belt replaced and said if I do that, I need to get the water pump replaced as well.

I said I probably would (I usually say this in response to everything a mech says to buy time to come home and read up on it)

So reading up on the timing belt, I can't find anything that associates it with the water pump. But how can I determine myself if it needs to be replaced other than paying for carfax reports or talking to the previous owner (Previous owner is clueless about basically everything)

And should I replace the water pump with it? Any idea how much this would run me?

Other than that, the tranny runs like a god damn mechanical orgasm. They adjusted it somehow so it's a lot more peppy to boot. I'm so fucking stoked about it. 3 year warranty.

The timing belt should be replaced every 7 years or 100k. If its never been done you should have it done. When they are in replacing the timing belt the water pump is right there. Its cheap maintenance to do it then instead of later. Its a labor intensive project. should be 600-1200 depending on who does the work.

It is highly suggested you get all related moving parts replaced when doing timing belt, like water pump, adjuster pullies, and maybe hydrolic adjuster too, and may as well other accessory belts, and maybe radiator hoses too.

on my camrys the timing belt drives the water pump, perhaps it is the same for the tl?

on tl timing belt replacement--replace the tensioner too
