Extra bolt after timing belt replacement -where does it go?
Hi, new member here, with a somewhat embarrassing first post. I helped my SIL change his timing belt yesterday, and despite our best effort to keep up with things chronologically we ended up with one extra bolt near the end of reassembly
with no idea where it goes. It requires an 8mm socket. Any ideas?

That's the first thing that came to mind when looking at the picture.
It's not hard to over look, the other two shorter bolts are probably what's holding it (auto tensioner assembly) on now.
Correct - third bolt securing the serpentine tensioner, back in place now. (did I say thanks?) I'm puzzled what role this bolt plays since it's A) smaller diameter and B) much greater length than the other two (which seem adequate to secure the tensioner in place).

My best guess is that the auto tensioner is supposed to place a safe amount of engineered pressure, against the alt. belt at all engine rpm's, to adequately keep the belt stable/tight through said various rpms.
The middle bolt, the one in your picture, is (6X60) and adds extra clamping force along with the other two short one's (6X25) to keep that device in place while it applies force. As you can see from the picture below, the longer one goes in the middle of the triple bolt fastener pattern with the two short one's on the outside. The last thing anyone needs is that auto tensioner to disconnect/loosen significantly at highway speeds.
