Oil leak from VTEC Spool Valve

Hi everyone!

I was hoping you guys can give me more insight on this. I've recently developed an oil leak from the VTEC Spool Valve assembly (#12).

After pinpointing where the leak is coming from and doing some research with my cousin (mechanic), he thinks it could be that the Filter Assembly (#13) is not the correct size.

The thread we read was this one: Leaking oil from Vtec Solenoid/Spool valve. Any idea why? - Honda-Tech

To sum up the thread, people have tried replacing the Filter Assembly but it continues to leak. Others have said that they just replaced the Filter Assembly and the leak was fixed.

He believes it is because Acura changed to a thinner size rather than the original. I purchased the Filter Assembly from an Acura dealer, so I'm not sure what better place to purchase a new one would be other than the direct source itself.

With that said, are you guys aware if Acura changed the thickness of the Filter Assembly? If so, do you know where I can find the thicker one or what are your thoughts on it?

Thanks.

On my particular car and another friend's car. The gasket started leaking and that was changed and then oil started to come out of one of the sensors on top at the electrical connector. Sooner or later the sensors will need to be changed along with the gasket so it actually cheaper to just purchase #12 as one whole unit. If you need #12 I might see if my buddy still has a new one in the box or if he installed it before he sold his car.

I also noticed a leak near this area, but figured it was from the oil filter not being screwed on tightly. Now I'm thinking it's the spool valve gasket. Did you ever replace it? Problem resolved?

On my car it actually leaked from the gasket and one of the sensors. The actual sensor was actually leaking oil. The spool valve comes with a new gasket and two sensors. If you need one, i have a brand new oem acura that is still factory sealed that I would let go for $75 shipped.

Did you guys check everywhere else on the engine, from the looks of it on mine it is leaking also from behind the oil pump and around the oil pan. Not really looking forward to pulling this all apart, maybe some day.

How bad is your leak? I'm currently having to put in about a quart every other day and see the oil coming from this exact spot. Changed the PCV valve just incase but doesn't look like it made a difference.

Wow, not that bad. Just enough that it's obvious oil is leaking there, but I usually don't need to put in more than a quart over the oil change interval (I usually do between 5K and 6K miles).

I think I've got something really bad happening. I'll post a new topic tonight when I have a chance.

i am so not ready to be starting on another project, but this oil leak in my car is really bothering me.

i'm going to compare part costs of individually buying each piece in #12, compared to the whole set.
