Question Drivers side fan not coming on

Car started running hot (mostly when the outside temp is around 100) especially with AC on. When I turn AC off I noticed the temp drops to normal pretty quick. It seems the drivers side fan is not coming on. i disconnected the wire on top leading to the fan and see there is power there... Does this mean i need a new fan motor?

It could be the temperature sensor. check the motor if it is good, then it is the sensor.

swap power with other fan and operate ac,,should cause driver fan to come on with ac then

does the fan spin freely by hand?

most common failure is fan temp sensor

The wire for the passenger fan will not reach the drivers side (or vice versa) to check it can I just stick wires in to each connector?

I believe the sensor on my car (2000 TL) is located on the thermostat housing... Do I need to drain the coolant to replace this?

99s were at thermostat, and will have 2 sensors, one fan one temp

00 and on should have 1 sensor there for dash guage

but look at lower pass corner for a screw in unit with 1 wire as fan temp sensor

YES you can use any diy jumper wires to get power to fan for testing
thats why diy is all about! creativity in need

either place, fluid loss is minimal
so turn heater to hot- start car and let warm up with rad cap off
fill rad as needed

just BURP the system for possible air, no need to drain fully
UNLESS
you have 5+ years on the coolant in which case DIY change that and get the engine block drain bolt too!

I think the 2000 is the same as the 1999. Is this the part I am looking for (#15)? Is the fan switch and temp sensor the same thing?

From what I can see. I haven't taken the engine cover off yet. Have to get time away from work to get into it.

I can see 2 sensors on the thermo housing... one is bigger than the other and comes out sorta sideways (not straight up). Is it the water temp sensor that triggers the fan to come on?

If you've got power to the fan motor, you've eliminated the fuses, sensors, ecm, and relays. If the ground is also good, you need a new fan motor.

trash- cant you get power at the connector to fan, but not get sensor signal to complete the path to open or ground,,
or is it hot power means entire circuit good?

me not understand electrical very well~
trying to learn as worthless info discarded and more brain cells avaliable~

I don't think so. Sensor(s) tell the computer to trigger relay(s) which in turn supply power to the fan(s). Unless the relay were stuck on, everything in the circuit has to be working.

Replaced the sensor and both fans working now. That was an easy fix. However... my check engine light came on now... is that because I didn't disconnect the neg battery terminal? Since the sensor is connected to ecu?

not usually, but you never know
do an ecu reset with the clock fuse on passenger end of dash

if it comes back -(seeing you live in Ca where stores cant code scan for you)-
use Regions section to find a ziner with a scanner
or a muffler shop for diagnosis. smog rules allow that loophole~

Located on the water pump housing. I had some code issues due to the tranny but Aamco just put in a new torque converter. Car seems to run great except a slight misfire which I think is a bad coil pack diagnosed when my tranny failed last year.

better get a coil and find out which is bad
you will need to reset the ecu after that fix
most likely its the code now

Had the code checked at Midas, it was giving radiator water hot and radiator water cold codes... So I think the ecu freaked out when I changed the sensor without first disconnecting the neg battery terminal.

Thanks for all the help!

with the amount of bad info that sensor has been giving the ecu-
not a bad plan to force a full reset and relearn with the `clock fuse method`
remove for 1 minute and reinsert

did you mean on 99-00 its located on the `thermostat housing` on top of engine
not the water pump housing- located on front of engine?

again Im an 01 and looking for correct info to share

how much was the sensor and what did the parts place call it on the receipt?

It is # 15 on the link... Thermo housing.

What is the clock fuse method?

clock fuse located in small fuse panel on passenger end of dashboard
remove it for about 1 minute and reinsert
Its the secret backup power to the ecu

battery neg cable method requires you input the radio code,,
clock method doesnt effect that but will do what we want..quick clean and easy!

Awesome... I didn't know that. Took care of it last night. Car has been running good (aside from the slight misfire). This has been a great site! With the help from all of you I have literally saved hundreds if not thousands of $$$. I replaced my front pads and rotors not too long ago and I was worried after reading some of the posts about how hard it was to remove the rotors... however, mine came right off... easy easy fix. the entire job was under an hour. And the temp sensor was by far even easier than the brakes. This economy is forcing me to do the repair work myself, but I am actually thankful for it... it is rewarding!

the only difficult part of the brake job is the 2 screws and there are tricks for the removal

Everything on the car,,,is just bolts!
only limit for DIY is how many layers of skin off your hand are you willing to give up--
in exchange for the job being done to your own high standards?

and not pay 100 an hour for a 10 buck an hour employee to turn those same bolts~

buy yourself lunch for the 2 diys,,well done~

Hey guys, same problem here, driver side fan wont come on. What was done: relaced motor, checked temperature sensor, replaced fan switch A, checked fan relay. What is going to be next ?

since thread was bumped, still having the same problem. My passenger side fan roars on when the car is cut off, but stops immediately when key is turned to "on" position 2002 type S.
Changed fan sensor/switch on radiator...

do you know if I have one too on 99 ? Where is it located(switch on radiator)? I replaced the one which is on engine, driver side under air intake.

No the 99-00 only has a coolant fan switch in the cylinder head, whereas the 01-03 has one in the cylinder head as well as on the radiator.
