Dangerous, TL shuts off sometimes while driving, but can pull over to restart engine.
Hi, when my 99 TL is turned on and I'm driving, sometimes it'll just suddenly shut completely off and I'll have to cruise to the side, stop the car, and start again.. Signal lights and emergency lights don't work of course during this.
I've been lucky to avoid accidents so far, but it's rather dangerous when this happens, especially on the freeway.
Any suggestions?
It's hard to reproduce to show a mechanic, though I do notice this happens more frequently in stuffy hot conditions, though this could just be coincidence. It's even happened one time when I was only parked and the car was on, as well as driving at slow, medium, or fast speeds.
But I can't reproduce it by force to show, sometimes it just doesn't happen.
Help anyone?

Search the board. '99 models have ign. switch failures. Check with the dealer (have VIN # handy) to see if/when the switch was repaired or replaced. Replaced switchs also fail in time according to AZine members.
when I saw the thread title I thought- let me guess- a 99
and lo and behold!!
there was a recall for the ignition switch, back electrical part- acura replaces it once then you have to the next 2-3 times it fails
CAll acura dealer service or customer service at 1-800-382-2238x5 both will need the cars VIN- the 17 digit id number
If they say it has not been fixed yet- make an appointment- they may have to order the part-
if so, talk to the service MANAGER about it,,, because its so dangerous--they might keep your car-- and give a free loaner
If they say it was already done- go buy one at parts store- easy diy- we have instuctions on our diy section
until then remove all extra keys from the ring to reduce side pull inside the switch

I had the same thing happen to me right after the ignition switch recall was done !
After long "discussion" with the service manager he claimed the recall only applied to the mechanical portion of the interlock and not the electrical switch. After paying him $120 to "diagnose" the problem (the buggers !) it was found that the electrical switch need to be replaced for another $250 !
Needless to say, I bought the switch ($125) and installed myself with the help of the information on the Acurazine site !

I'm with these guys in saying electical switch but if that does not do it, might want to check main relay.........that's easy to fix though, remove cover and resolder all joints. then reassemble it and put it back in.
usually main relay = car no start on hot days but I have seen it act up like that before

Guess I don't need to start a new thread.
My car is doing the exact same thing. Luckily it has only happened at very slow speeds. Mostly while turning. Today it happened in the middle of an intersection. The lady waiting on me to finish the turn just looked at me like I was crazy. Most of the time I can put it in neutral and start it, but not this time. I had to put in in park and start it.
Sort of scarry. I will not let the wife drive it.
I'm going to call the dealer on Monday. Thanks guys.
