D5 clanking over 40

Hey, I recently bought an 02 type-s with 146k.

After buying the car, i noticed that when going into 3rd gear the car shimmies back and forth when accelerating slowly. Also when going over 40 mph (only a few times this happened) there is a sort of rattling or clanking sound coming from the tranny or somewhere. The weird thing is that this only happens in D5 with gives me the idea that maybe d5 is starting to deteriorate or the the gears are loose or something.

Does anyone know if overdrive/D5 is external to the transmission like in a few cars? Also just wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this in their tl?

5th gear should engage at 45 mph. It does sound tranny related though...

Hope it's not too bad.

The fluid is a little red-brownish but i got it changed a few weeks ago. I need to get it changed again because its been awhile and all the crap probably got into the fluid. I keep it in D4 while driving locally and it goes up to about 70/75 in fourth.

Having just recently purchased the TL with the higher miles, it would help if you knew the previous maintenance was regularly done. If unknown, then start from fresh. Find out if the recall work was performed and if the tranny was replaced at some point.

Another drain 'n fill of the tranny can't hurt at this point. While you're at it....replace the "hidden" transmission filter. The DIY is nearby. Also, an alignment shop could inspect your front end suspension up on a rack and tell you what may need attention.

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what fluid exactly did you use and what method of replacement??
basic gravity drain and refill 3.4 quarts?

if a shop used dextron3 your trans is toast and its their fault
dex3 forbidden in the TL... and why acura came up with the 3x3
for times of small addition of dex3 by accident!!!!

the correct stuff for us is honda DW-1

our filter is external on the top..25 bucks aftermarket
not inside the pan like older cars

iirc 2nd shares with 5th gear so loss of clutch material would affect both

continue to use gear D4,,it just became a 4 speed auto!

clean the shift selenoids (external) and replace the filter- also external

look at bolts mounting brackets to trans and bolts holding trans to engine
see blue paint on them? thats a warranty unit
