CV Boot damaged and leaking.

The dealership said my right outer CV boot is split open and leaking fluid. They quoted me $185.00 to fix it. That seems a little steep. Where can I take my car to get this fixed? I don't know what a CV boot is. Can someone shed some light on this and help please?

the CV boot is the rubber boot on your half shaft. (driveshaft)
They have to take it off the car to fix it, thats why it costs alot. You dont want to let it go, the half shafts are expensive to replace and can cause more damage as they wear. If for some reason you think thats alot check around with tranny rebuilders and other independant shops to see how much they charge to do the work

The CV boot surrounds the Constant Velocity or CV joint and keeps it lubricated. You definitely want to take care of it right away in order to keep the CV joint from failing.

Here's some more info:

$185 doesn't sound outrageous for a dealership but you might want to get quotes from a couple of other places.

check out this place. they are cheap with oem parts and are fast to deliver.

you may also need to know if its a outer boot or inner boot.

look under driveshaft

its not the parts that are bringing the cost up, its all labor from having to remove the driveshaft

Its not, most shops can do it, its just a part that is a little more involved to take off than a wheel

If the split is that big, most of the grease inside will likely have spitted out due to the rotating shafts. The dry CV joints will wear out in no time, and are much more expensive to fix. So get it fixed ASAP.

get it fixed... i had a Probe GT (it was cool at the time) and the boot went. I did not know what it was. I was 19. well, once it was all said and done I shelled out $1200 (witha tow 45 miles). Or i could have spent less than $200 and had someone fix it.

If all the grease is gone and dirt got in, its already to late. You might want to think about getting a reman from your local auto parts store and install it yourself or your mechanic.

For the same cost in labor you can have the new axle installed and not have to worry about the possibility of having to replace it anyway and pay again for the labor, which is your primary expense.
