Check Engine Light - Self Diagnostic?

Check Engine Light - Self Diagnostic?
Is it possible to determine what the check engine light issue is on my 2001 TL without going to AutoZone?
I also have a 95 Maxima and I can turn the key a few ways then count the blinking lights. Is this possible with an Acura? It's my mother-in-law's car and I want to see what the problem is + see if it's fixable.
I googled a lot + searched here and only found threads on resetting the light.
Thanks in advance!

You can jump pins 8 and 13 to get the code then you will have to look online what that code means (it will be different than your typical scanner code)
Code readers are pretty cheap now days, you can get bluetooth adapters for 20 bucks and free apps for smart phones or look on amazon or go to harbor freight, they also range from 20 bucks and up.

Yeah, a scanner or code reader is well worth the money spent, IMO. The old school flash method is rather iffy and can easily be misread as the wrong code. An alternative would be to just drive the car to most any local auto parts store, as they will normally read the codes for free.
