Cat Rattle

I recently noticed that when i closed my door, i would hear the sound of metal clanking coming from my car.

I also had a funny rattling sound happenning during acceleration and when i turned on my car.

Figuring it wasnt in my car, or in my engine bay, i finally concluded that it must be the test pipe i had installed to replace my resonator.

i was wrong..

its the shield around my cat converter.

the question i have it, is there any way to remove this? will there be any adverse affects? its more of an annoyance than anything, and it kind of makes my exhaust sound raspy because of how rapidly it vibrates during fast acceleration.

for those wondering: i realized it was the cat shield by holding a towel firmly over the shield (it was hot) and the sound disapeared.

That converter gets VERY hot, and the shield is to protect the body/passanger area and under the car from fires. So either re-tighten it or replace it.

If its the lower/under cat shield- the one closer to the ground- you can remove it if needed.
The one on top of the cat- no way

Maybe someone more educated than I can confirm this, but I've always heard that you can safely remove it without incident.

Or just to be sure, go to a muffler shop and ask them to weld where it is loose.

you can remove the one on the cat. There is more than enough room between the cat and the heat shield on the car and the cat. If you can have it reattached some how it would be better but i wouldnt worry about removing it. You could probably use large hose clamps to tighten it up and keep it in place rattle free
