Car just DIES!!

Hey guys,
Over the past few months, my car (1999 TL) will just die. The radio will stay on, but the engine just shuts down, and so does the rest of the car. Afterwards, I'll put the car in park and I'll try to start it, but it won't. I have to try 5-10 times before it will start again. When I'm trying to start it, it will start for less than a second and immediately die again. I have replaced the battery, and I'm thinking it's either the start or the ignition switch.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. This is becoming a real pain in the arse.

should like an ignition problem. go to the dealer and have them check it out. that sucks having your car die on you.

Do you have another Honda or Acura key on your keyring?

I had some stalling and starting problems with my 1999 TL that were eliminated after I took a Honda key off my keyring. The Honda key also had an an ignition immobilizer. Look for the flashing immobilizer key symbol when you have the stalling problem.

And the immobilizer keys themselves can also go bad if they get too hot or if they get wet. If you have a spare key, try using that one to see if the problem goes away.

Also, there was an ignition switch recall for the second generation TL models. Did you ever have that replaced? If not, your Acura dealer should install a new one for free.

Good Luck!

The mileage is not a factor for the recall.

But I'm not sure if it applies to all 2nd gen TL models. You can call Acura with your VIN number and they can tell you if the recall applies and also if your car has received the new ignition switch.

You can also find this online after registering your car on Acura.com.

For my 1999 TL I called to find that the previous owner had the replacement switch installed.
