Car dies while driving & won't restart for a while
I'll be driving for a little while or at idle and the car will just shut down. I take the key out and put it back in and turn it to the second position, I don't see any instrument lights turn on. I turn it to third position and try to crank it; it seems like it starts, but as soon as I release the key, it shuts down. If I let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, it usually starts back up. Any ideas?
I replaced the alternator not long ago, if it matters.

I see you have a thermoblock spacer, so I am guessing the egr passage and port cleaning was done with its install? within last 70kmiles?
is this a 99? those have a major prob with ignition switch back- the electrical part
car will shut down in a turn then come back on,,mystery dies while at idle
Wiggle the key in ignition, move it up and down slightly,,effect?
99s had a recall on that part, but it fails again and on you to fix, cheap easy diy
Of course- because you had an alt problem= there may be a battery problem now!
Have the system tested- free at parts stores
when either one is weak, the other takes a beating keeping the car running
Batt failure often takes out alt,,as it has to work full time at max ability
and driving with no alt is sucking every bit of life force out of the battery to get home....= new batt too
system test needed!

Yes, this is a 99TL. The EGR was replaced under recall at around the same time or a little after the spacer was put in; its probably been 50-60k since then. The battery is fine so no issues there. What is this ignition switch part that your referring to?
Thank you.
Thank you.

they did not replace anything on the egr recall
simply drilled out the 1 egr port on 99s manifold to accept a smooth bore sleeve,
assume to cut down on crud buildup catching and clogging--but it didnt solve the prob
2000 and on got 6 ports! and still same issue
for a 99 I would do it again with 60 on it since the dealer job
the ignition switch was another recall for 99s
but dealer used same crud part which wears out again
turns black inside!! not a good thing for conducting power~
many threads on the subject of 99 with mystery stalling and running
its sold separate from the key part, see DIY section for help
since its been done once, now its easier
verify with acura care that it was done under recall

never trust batt is good,,you replaced the alt so there was a major prob
Batt can fail for many reasons at any time
test to verify!
the electric part of ign switch can be found at local parts stores too, different brand

Hey Optomus, have the electrical starting system load tested at your local parts store. Once everything checks out ok, make sure that all of the pertinent wire connections and grounds are tight.
A replacement ignition switch isn't that expensive and is a relatively easy DIY. Check out some other posts or the "DIY" sticky for more details.
As 01tl4tl earlier stated......'99 TL's are very notorious for this problem re-occurring with the faulty switches. Can be dangerous if the car shut's down while driving !

Ok, so it happened today after several days of no issue. Once the car stopped, I tried starting it and nothing so I wiggle the key in the switch several times and it starts up. I guess now I just need to look up that DIY and get it replaced. Thank you for all your help!
Now I just need to find the DIY on how to reset the SRS light that wont go away since the alternator went bad.
